The most popular HBO show ever, Game of Thrones is set in a mythical land and depicts the time when there was no sense of right or wrong amongst humanity whatsoever. One of the major offences shown in the series is women being constantly treated like objects.

Be it getting married at a very young age or worse sold in exchange for material things or be it having illegitimate relationships, the Game of Thrones shows some serious women victimization.

While some of the top actresses play these women’s characters in the show, in real life, they are supporting a call to end violence against women. Lena Headey, playing Queen Cersei Lannister and Natalie Dormer, playing Margaery Tyrell, are both part of the ‘Because I Am A Girl’ Campaign.

This Plan UK campaign aims to help women across the world, especially in poor countries, where their rights are most abused. Research states that one in nine girls are married before the age of 15 and pregnancy is the leading cause of their death before they reach the age of 20.

As part of the campaign, joined by singer Beverley Knight, the Game of Thrones actresses, had a series of phrases written across their faces against women violence and photographed requesting others to join the good cause.

Plan UK also launched an app by the name of Face Up, to allow supporters to have such phrases digitally placed on their photos and shared across social media where they can’t be ignored.

Pakistan is one of the countries where campaigns against women violence are most needed. There is no one to hear the victims’ stories and no one to help them out. Our local celebrities and known figures, who can make a difference using their stance, should be a part of such campaigns too.
