The Pakistani team at the Olympics has definitely gone down in the last few years. The number of athletes supported and encouraged to participate has dwindled. However, that is not to say that the team that has gone nonetheless is not capable. Some of the finest athletes are representing Pakistan, one of whom has already made us proud.
The Tokyo Olympics 2021
The Tokyo Olympics commenced on July 23 at the National Stadium of Japan. This is the 32nd edition of the mega multi-sports event to be held in Tokyo, Japan. Hence, this also makes it the second time Japan has hosted the event since the last time in 1964. As such, Japan becomes the first city in Asia to hold Summer Olympics twice.
Moreover, what is interesting is how this year’s event is also being called ‘Olympics 2020’. Since the last year’s games were cancelled due to coronavirus, this year is being called 2020. Additionally, more than eleven thousand athletes are participating in the 339 events featuring 33 sports in 50 disciplines. This year even new sports have been added.
Pakistani Team
The Pakistani team at the 2020’s Olympics in Tokyo consists of 10 athletes. Men and women from different parts of Pakistan have dedicated their lives to their sport of passion. Without further ado, meet the people making us proud!
1. Arshad Nadeem
​Nadeem is representing Pakistan in the javelin throw event at the Tokyo Games. Moreover, he qualified for the Olympics during the 2019 South Asian Games. In that year, he hurled the javelin as far as 86.29 meters to create a new South Asian record.Â
2. Mahnoor Shahzad
Shahzad has been the women’s singles badminton champion in 2017. She is also representing Pakistan at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. As a result, Shahzad is supposed to take on Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in her match.
3. Shah Hussain Shah
Shah is the son of the 1988 Olympic bronze medallist Hussain Shah and is going to be competing in the judo category. This will be his second appearance at the Olympics.
4. Gulfam Joseph
Incredibly talented Joseph is a 21-year-old shooter who will participate in the 10m Air Pistol event at the Tokyo Olympics.Â
5. Bisma Khan
A brilliant and dedicated swimmer, Bisma is participating in the 50m freestyle swimming competition.
6. Ghulam Mustafa Bashir
Bashir is participating in the category of rapid-fire Pistol 25 metre.
7. Syed Muhammad Haseeb Tariq
Another brilliant swimmer, Haseeb Tariq has gone for the category of swimming 100-metre Freestyle Men’s.
8. Talha TalibÂ
A weightlifter from Gujranwala, Talib is competing in the ‘Weightlifting 67kg’ category and missed by a mere margin of 2kg from the bronze medal.
9. Muhammad Khalil Akhtar
Akhtar has been chosen for the Rapid Fire Pistol 25 metre at Olympics 2020.
10. Najma ParveenÂ
Parveen will be competing in the ‘Athletics 200 metres’ category in Olympics 2020.
