Federal Minister Announces Budget

Following the release of Pakistan’s budget for the fiscal year 2024–2025 yesterday, there is a noticeable feeling of shock that sweeps across the country. The public seems to be confused and concerned about the government’s budget plan, which was hailed as a way to get the nation through economic difficulties. But ultimately, this year’s budget announcement is only about to make things more difficult for the people. Let’s have a closer look at the highlights of the recently announced budget.

The Common Man’s Nightmare

The budget for FY2024-25 of 18.9 trillion Pakistani rupees ($67.84 billion), sets high goals in the face of difficult economic conditions. The administration intends to deal with a 6.9% GDP budget deficit while aiming for 3.6% economic growth. With defense spending projected to cost 2.1 trillion rupees and debt servicing is predicted to consume a staggering 9.8 trillion rupees!

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has set an enormous tax revenue target of Rs. 12.9 trillion of the Budget For FY2024-25, which has left many people shocked. This number is a considerable increase over prior years, suggesting that the government will tighten its grip on tax evaders while the salaried class prepares for the consequences.

All The Important Details From Budget FY2024-25

While the budget for FY2024-25SaU cover’s a vast spectrum of domains, we’ll be focusing on the more important aspects. These will in one way or another be directly linked to your average salaried individual. Here are the highlights from the budget announcement of 2024-25:

  1. New Income Tax Slabs: The first thing under crosshairs is the tax slab for the average salaried individual. According to the budget for FY2024-25; the tax rate will be applicable from the 1st of June, 2024 and sees an increase in rates where anyone earning between Rs. 600,000 – Rs. 1,200,000 will be taxed double at a rate of 5% of their annual salary exceeding Rs. 600,000.
For those ranging above Rs. 1,200,000 and below Rs. 2,200,000, individuals will have to pay a staggering base 15% of their yearly income showing an increase of 2.5% from the previous year. On top of this, they will also be forced to pay a fixed tax of Rs. 30,000. This trend gets worse as you go higher on the tax bracket. More tax brackets are covered in the following image:

  1. Increase In Petrol Prices: The federal government has also increased levy on petrol by a staggering Rs.20, this sees it going from Rs.60 to Rs.80. This sudden increase in levy will ultimately have a ripple effect on numerous amenities such as transport, production and living expenses. Apart from the rise in fuel prices, the government has suggested raising the tax on light diesel oil. There will be an increase in the development levy on light diesel oil from Rs. 50 to Rs. 75 per liter!
  2. Vehicle Tax Registration: In another shocking turn of events, in place of engine capacity, the federal minister stated that pricing will determine the advance tax on car registration. So you can forget about paying a minimal tax on smaller vehicles, instead their actual values will determine the tax percentage.
  3. Phone Pricing: The mobile market proves to be one of the biggest sources of money, specially in cities such as Karachi. According the the new budget, different phone categories will be taxed an astonishing 18% of their value! This means if you’re looking at smartphones for Rs. 50,000, their new price is officially Rs. 59,000 after taxes. We will also see a eye-watering tax of 25% being implemented on smartphones costing more than $500.
  4. Import Items: The federal minister made the decision to no longer exclude luxury car imports from taxes. It has been agreed to raise the $50,000 import vehicle’s taxes and levies. The import tax on glass goods has also been removed by the government. The rate of import levies on steel and paper goods will be raised, as planned. The only exception to import items are essential goods which will not be taxed.
  5. Tax On Cigarettes & Nicotine: According to reports, the government intends on cracking down on factories where fake cigarettes are being reproduced. Not only this, but according to the budget, to deter people further away from drugs, the government has made the decision to tax the materials used to make cigarettes by Rs. 44,000 per ton! Nicotine pouches will also see a FED at a rate of Rs. 1200 per kg.
  6. Branded Apparel: In an attempt to raise the GST on textile goods, the federal minister declared in his address that the government has placed an 18% sales tax on branded clothing, shoes and other imported leather goods in the country.

  7. Property & Construction: If you thought buying a house for your family was difficult in this economy, well it certainly just got more harder. The minister said that a 5% tax will be applied to the acquisition of new plots as well as residential and commercial real estate. FED on cement used in construction of new homes will be increased to Rs.3 per kg. Not only this, but a 15% tax will be imposed on filers and 45% on non-filers when dealing with property.

Other Affected Sectors And Details From Budget FY2024-25:

While these details might not affect the average salaried class individual in Pakistan, here are a couple of other aspects discussed in the new budget:

  1. Education Scholarships: The government has announced more scholarship programs to be introduced in order to cater more students. An estimate of 10 million students are to be catered according to the new budget.
  2. Solar Industry: In order to support the solar panel business, the coalition government  eliminated import taxes on equipment, including raw materials used in the production of solar panels, inverters, and batteries, as well as plant machinery and associated equipment.

  3. Power Generation: Another sight for sore eyes is the allocation of funds for the water resources in the country. Rs. 206 Billion will be allocated which will be distributed amongst the Mohmand, Diamer Bhasha Dams and Chashma Right Bank Canal.
  4. Aviation: Major airports of the country are to be outsourced instead of running them locally and a whopping Rs. 622 billion worth of liabilities have been transferred from PIA.
  5. Increased Salary & Pension: It is reported that government employees from grades 1 thru 16 will see a hefty increase of 25% in their salaries & pensions. While grades above that will receive a handsome increase of 20% in their salaries & pensions as well.
  6. Kissan Package: The budget for FY2024-25 also stated that Rs. 5 billion ha been set aside for farmers’ packagers and that the government has chosen to capitalize on private sector involvement in this area.
  7. Benazir Income Support: The minister stated that a 27% increase in funding has been suggested for the Benazir Income Support Program. The BISP fund would grow to an astonishing Rs. 593 billion! This will in-turn support 0.7 million more people than the previously allocated amount.
  8. Inflation: While this is a hard pill to swallow, the government aims to reduce inflation in the country yet again. The plan is to keep inflation at a steady rate of 12% for the FY2024-25.

Concluding Remarks

The silent pain that the average person endures is ignored in the midst of all these discussions. It appears that the budget does not adequately meet the people’s urgent needs, even though its goal is long-term stability. The government has failed to time-and-time again meet the real requirements of the people and this year looks no different.

The release of the budget for FY2024-25 has resulted in a dire outlook for the upcoming year for the typical Pakistani. The already high cost of living is expected to rise much more. The relief efforts that have been implemented are minimal and hardly begin to address the financial struggles that Pakistani households endure already.

The Budget For FY2024-25 is a sobering reminder of the fine line Pakistan must walk between social welfare and budgetary sustainability as it navigates the economic recovery. It is a call to action for the government to make sure that its citizens are not left behind in the pursuit of economic resilience, in addition to setting lofty goals which might not even be achievable. All we can do now is wait…and hope, as always.

Budget 2023-24: Pakistan Government Unveils New Revenue Measures

Budget 2023-24: Pakistan Government Unveils New Revenue Measures
Source: Global Village

The Pakistani government has recently unveiled new revenue measures amounting to Rs223 billion in its latest budget announcement. These measures are in addition to the taxes introduced in the mini-budget announced in mid-February, which will remain in effect. The government aims to generate over Rs500 billion in additional revenue for the tax year 2023-24 through these measures, which include raising the general sales tax from 17 percent to 18 percent, imposing a 25 percent sales tax on luxury item imports, and increasing taxes on cigarettes and drinks.

Key Highlights

  • The government plans to share the tax details with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and expects that the Fund will not raise any objections, as all their concerns have been addressed.
  • The government intends to allocate Rs23 billion to industries and individuals under the revenue relief changes announced in the Finance Bill 2023. This relief includes Rs13 billion in customs duty and Rs10 billion in income tax. However, no relief has been announced in sales tax and excise duty.
  • The government is optimistic about achieving a 28 percent higher revenue target for the next fiscal year, based on a projected GDP growth of 3.5 percent, average inflation of 21 percent, and the revenue measures outlined in the budget.
  • To promote various sectors, the budget offers major relief in the IT sector for exports, solarisation, agriculture, and real estate.

Income Tax

  • The Finance Bill proposes the continuation of the super tax but with fair adjustments for individuals earning over Rs150 million. Three new income levels have been introduced: Rs350 million to Rs400 million, Rs400 million to Rs500 million, and above Rs500 million. These income brackets will be subject to tax rates of 6 percent, 8 percent, and 10 percent, respectively.
  • Other income tax changes include a 0.6 percent withholding tax on citizens not on the Active Taxpayers’ List (ATL) when they withdraw cash exceeding Rs50,000. The withholding tax rates on goods supply, services, and contracts will increase by 1 percent, with exceptions for specific items. Furthermore, a final withholding tax of 10 percent will be charged on bonus shares issued by a company, or 20 percent for non-filers of tax.
  • The Finance Bill also proposes adjustments to the withholding tax rates on payments to non-residents using debit/credit or prepaid cards. Similarly, an adjustable advance tax of Rs200,000 will be charged when issuing a work permit/visa for a foreign domestic helper.

Sales Tax and Excise Duty

  • In terms of sales tax and excise duty, the government has made certain adjustments. Sales tax has been withdrawn on edible products sold in bulk under brand names or trademarks. The tax rate has increased from 12 percent to 15 percent on supplies made by point-of-sale (POS) retailers dealing in leather and textile products.
  • Furthermore, a federal excise duty (FED) has been imposed on energy-inefficient fans and incandescent bulbs at rates of Rs2,000 per fan and 20 percent ad valorem, respectively. The scope of FED on services has been expanded to include royalty and fees for technical services.
  • Sales tax has been exempted for another year ending June 2024 on contraceptives and accessories, plant saplings, combine harvesters, dryers for agricultural products, no-till-direct seeders, planters, trans-planters, other planters, bovine semen, and the import of IT equipment by IT and ITeS exporters registered with the Pakistan Software Export Board.
  • In the federal capital, a 15 percent tax will be charged on electric power transmission services. The rate has been reduced to 15 percent from 16 percent on IT-based system development consultants. A lower rate of 5 percent is proposed for services provided by restaurants and other food outlets if payment is made through debit or credit cards, mobile wallets, or QR scanning.

The Pakistani government’s new budget is a mixed bag. On the one hand, it raises taxes on a number of goods and services, which will likely lead to higher prices for consumers. On the other hand, it also provides some relief to certain sectors of the economy, such as the IT sector. Overall, the impact of the new budget on the Pakistani economy remains to be seen.

Sindh Government Announces Shift To Solar Power For Major Hospitals

Sindh Government Announces Shift To Solar Power For Major Hospitals
Source: PakTV

The Sindh government has taken a significant step towards sustainability by announcing plans to shift major hospitals in the province to solar power. This initiative is part of the government’s larger solar power plan, aimed at reducing dependence on traditional energy sources and promoting clean, renewable energy solutions. The announcement was made by the Provincial Minister of Sindh for Energy, Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh, during the inauguration of a solar power park in the Karachi press club.

The logistics of the plan

The solar power park, with a capacity of 60KV, will play a crucial role in meeting 90 percent of the press club’s power needs. This is a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to harness the power of the sun and provide sustainable energy solutions. Minister Sheikh also highlighted that government buildings, prisons, and schools will be included in the solar power plan, with the aim of ending electricity load shedding in the province.

The minister emphasized that the government’s objective is to address the economic crisis and uplift the country. By investing in solar power, the government hopes to create a more sustainable and self-reliant energy sector. Minister Sheikh took the opportunity to criticize the PTI government, accusing them of hindering power projects in Sindh. He expressed confidence that the PPP (Pakistan People’s Party) will secure victory in the upcoming elections, highlighting their commitment to promoting renewable energy and sustainable development.

Provincial and Federal agenda aligning

This announcement from the Sindh government aligns with the federal government’s efforts to embrace solar power. Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the conversion of all federal government buildings in Islamabad to solar power within a strict timeframe of seven weeks. This directive showcases the government’s determination to reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuel and embrace renewable energy sources. The prime minister also instructed officials to initiate solarization projects in other parts of the country, extending the benefits of solar power to various regions.

The shift to solar power for major hospitals is a commendable move by the Sindh government. Solar energy offers a clean and sustainable alternative to traditional power sources, reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental preservation. By embracing solar power, hospitals can ensure a reliable and uninterrupted energy supply, leading to improved healthcare services. Moreover, the initiative to expand solar power to government buildings, prisons, and schools will have a significant impact on reducing electricity load shedding and enhancing energy efficiency in the province.

The Sindh government’s commitment to renewable energy is a step in the right direction, contributing to the overall development and sustainability of the province. It sets an example for other regions and institutions to follow, encouraging the adoption of clean energy solutions and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. With continued efforts and investments in solar power, Pakistan can pave the way towards a greener and more sustainable future.

The Untapped Potential Of Women In Pakistan

Pakistan has a lot of potential for growth but undeniably, one of the biggest untapped resource is its significant female population that still awaits inclusion in the national economy. As per the World Economic Forum’s 2021 Global Gender Gap Report, Pakistan ranked 153rd out of 156 countries, which indicates massive strides the country needs to take to ensure gender diversity and inclusion of women in its socioeconomic mainstream.

Source: Pakistan Labour Force Survey 2020-21

As per the last published Pakistan Labour Force Survey 2020-21, numbers show stark disparities along gender lines. Women’s participation in the national labor force is most concerning being 21.4 per cent of the country’s working-age population, as against the male labour force marked at 67.9 percent.
We interviewed Rabel Sadozai, the newly appointed Director Marketing and Sales at Fatima Fertilizer and the first female to hold such a prominent position in Pakistan’s agriculture and fertilizer sector, to discuss the potential role of Pakistani women to promote the country’s socio-economic prosperity and what it will take towards its realization.

B: How important is it to be recognized as the first woman in Pakistan’s agriculture sector to hold a senior-level management position?

RS: I consider this recognition as a true representation of millions of empowered women, directly or indirectly associated with the agriculture sector of Pakistan. It gives me the opportunity to use my influence for the betterment of farmers in general and female farmers in particular. A recent example of this commitment was marked by Sarsabz – the flagship brand of Fatima Fertilizer, hosting a special panel discussion at the Pakistan Pavilion in Dubai Expo 2020 to celebrate our three exceptionally inspiring female farmers and share their inspirational stories with the World.

The guest panelists included Rabia Sultan – progressive farmer from Muzaffargarh who defied all odds in a male-dominated profession, Nazo Darejo – a brave woman from Sindh who sacrificed a great deal to protect the piece of land she called home and whose inspirational story was highlighted by Sarsabz through a special web series called ‘Kissan Kahani’ to a wide online audience, and Azra Mehmood Sheikh – a progressive farmer from Bahawalpur who actively advocates about the hardships faced by farmers in South Punjab.

Being able to introduce Kissan Day to Pakistan is something that I will always be proud of, as it was not only recognized by the country and its industry stakeholders, but it has also become an annual event to be celebrated on December 18. The campaign was so influential that it was selected by Kotler as a case study in Essentials of Modern Marketing – Pakistan Edition.

B: Tell us about your journey of nine years at Fatima Fertilizer and your key accomplishments related to marketing communications?

RS: I was able to achieve a number of goals during my nine years at Fatima Fertilizer, and I took on as many marketing communication challenges as I could, but being able to introduce Kissan Day to Pakistan is something that I will always be proud of, as it was not only recognized by the country and its industry stakeholders, but it has also become an annual event to be celebrated on December 18. The campaign was so influential that it was selected by Kotler as a case study in Essentials of Modern Marketing – Pakistan Edition.

Over the years, I’ve used data to establish how Fatima Fertilizer’s products are giving on average 10% greater yields as compared to conventional fertilizer. This brand promise has been purposely communicated in such a manner that it shows how a farmer can create a better life for himself and his family that leads to prosperity of the village and eventually impacts Pakistan’s GDP as agriculture contributes on average 22-25%.
We also launched true farmer stories under Kissan Kahani to help educate our stakeholders on the impactful role our farmers are playing in helping sustain Pakistan’s food security.
Overall, our efforts have been duly recognized not only by local platforms such as the Pakistan Digital Awards but also the global ones including MARCOM, AVA, and Effies.

B: In your opinion, what factors are responsible for the under-representation of women within the corporate and civil sectors of Pakistan?

RS: Women may be under-represented in these sectors but not in the agriculture sector. Women are extremely empowered on the rural side to help not just with domestic housework but field work and livestock farming as well. I feel it is my responsibility to clarify this common misconception. As far as corporate and civil sectors are concerned, I feel women are deprived of an environment that helps them balance work and home responsibilities efficiently. The key to my success was not only my ability to effectively manage the roles of a team leader, manager, wife, mother, and so on, but the fact that I was given an environment where I was empowered to manage and balance these roles. Employers whether government or private need to realize that the needs of women are different from men. We need policies and benefits that match their circumstances. For example, women need to feel secure while stepping out of their homes for work, they need to be given daycare facilities or an equivalent allowance to manage it, maternity leaves and so on. According to recent studies, the gender-wage gap in Pakistan has reached 55.6 percent, which is concerning, to say the least, because a woman has to weigh the benefits of her working against the associated costs.

B: How many Pakistani women are currently engaged in Pakistan’s agriculture sector and how can they claim more important roles within this industry?

RS: Currently, more than 22 million women work in the agriculture sector and contribute to the advancement of this sector. As per an earlier issued report by UN Women titled “Rural Women in Pakistan-Status Report 2018”, agriculture is the main labour activity of rural women with approximately 75 percent of women employed in the agriculture sector. The empowerment of these rural women and the realization of their human rights, in addition to their important role in nation-building, is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) related to gender equality.
Women need education foremost followed by skill-set enhancement. Companies like ours work with a lot of progressive females and seek to empower them by giving them an opportunity to project their work. For example, we recently helped Ms. Jugno Mohsin, a female farmer who worked to revive a dying breed of local cotton called ‘Khaki Desan’, by providing her with the technical knowledge and giving her the opportunity to create a fabric from this cotton which can be marketed to a global audience.

B: How important is women’s participation to achieve overall economic growth and prosperity for the country?

RS: I think our founding father, Quaid-e-Azam made it clear that women had to work side by side with men if we are to transform Pakistan into a strong and prospering nation. Now whether we do it starting from our homes, schools, offices or factories is dependent on a mix of our own capabilities and opportunities available to us. Women are almost 50% of Pakistan’s population, so there is no question that a big responsibility rests on our shoulders to help develop our home i.e. Pakistan, and I believe being aware of this responsibility is the first step we need to take.

Trump’s Tariffs are Now Affecting Penguins

Trump’s Tariffs are Now Affecting Penguins
Trump’s Tariffs are Now Affecting Penguins

In a bizarre twist of international politics, the remote and unpopulated Heard and McDonald Islands — better known for their penguins than politics — have been placed in the crosshairs of Donald Trump’s latest tariffs.

Australia Baffled by ‘Penguin Tariff’

Situated about 4,000 km southwest of Australia, these distant Antarctic islands have not received human visitors in almost a decade. Only reachable by a seven-day boat trip from Perth, the islands feature nothing but glaciers, penguin colonies, elephant seals, and Australia’s sole active volcano, Big Ben. And yet,. somehow they are now subject to U.S. import tariffs under Trump’s new trade policy, with a 10% tariff imposed on their alleged exports.

Australian authorities were perplexed. “Poor old penguins, I don’t know what they did to Trump,” groused Trade Minister Don Farrell, terming the action a blatant error and the product of an ill-advised process. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese even went so far as to remark, “It just shows that nowhere on Earth is safe from this.”

Nature Untouched, But Not Unnoticed

Heard Island has no permanent residents. According to scientists and researchers such as University of Tasmania’s Professor Mike Coffin — who’s made the journey to its icy shores seven times — a thriving export trade is a joke. “There’s nothing there,” he said, aside from a little toothfish and icefish harvested by two licensed Australian fishing firms.

The true beauty of the islands is their untainted splendor. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, they’re among the world’s few natural ecosystems immune to alien invasion or human exploitation. Its black volcanic beaches are home to thousands of nesting penguins. Every so often, lava from Big Ben pours into the cold sea, producing steam plumes that are dramatic rather than global commerce agreements.

Wrong Data, Real Consequences

So how did these islands make it onto a U.S. tariff list? Likely due to flawed shipping data, where goods from other locations were mistakenly logged as originating from Heard and McDonald Islands.

Regardless, the inclusion has raised eyebrows and triggered diplomatic confusion. As Australia seeks clarity, one thing remains certain: even a frozen island of penguins isn’t immune to modern geopolitics.

Netflix’s Dark Anime ‘Devil May Cry’ Takes Fans by Storm

Netflix’s Dark Anime 'Devil May Cry' Takes Fans by Storm

Netflix’s new foray into animated video game adaptations, Devil May Cry, is a slow-burner shock. On the surface, the series goes heavy on aesthetics—twitchy gun battles, gothic buildings, and brooding emo soundtracks. It’s like a cutscene that’s been elongated too much, weighed down by too much exposition. The first few episodes lay out the rules of its demon-populated world in ways that labour. But when it gets going, particularly after episode 6, it has an emotional and stylistic payoff that fans did not anticipate.

Dante’s Cool, But the Story Goes Deeper

At its centre is Dante, the signature demon hunter, played by Johnny Yong Bosch. He’s witty and cocky, but just immature enough to be endearing. He’s joined by Mary, his gun-toting, strait-laced foil. They’re a standard anime couple, but the show’s real shock isn’t the banter—it’s the show’s investment in richer themes. There’s a low-burning discussion of purpose, power, and trauma that smolders beneath the stylised violence.

Devil May Cry separates itself from others by its guilt-free tone-jumping. Blood is splattered everywhere on-screen one moment, and then an ironically humorous needle drop that seems, well, slightly out of place—until it isn’t. It’s unwilling to be restrained by tonal whiplash, and, in some strange sense, this works. Its soundtrack, fully embracing its horror and emo ancestry, is effectively a love note to early 2000s anime enthusiasts.

The Real Star? The White Rabbit

Unexpectedly, it’s not Dante who captures the emotional centre—it’s the White Rabbit, the show’s initial villain. His quest to unite the demon and human realms is presented as traditional evil, but his history is full of complicated motivations. His journey becomes the emotional centre and strangely, more interesting than the main characters’. This uneven depth is both a weakness and a promise of improved character development to follow.

Devil May Cry Had Something to Say

Underneath its gaudy battles and puerile humour is a biting commentary on imperialism and power. The series addresses heavy issues—usually more gravely than its hero ever does. While the last twist is telegraphed, the finale’s dark tone and political undertones redeem it. Devil May Cry is not flawless, but it’s ambitious, it’s got attitude, and it’s got enough substance to leave viewers wanting season two.

How will ACP Pradyuman Die?

Barbosa, played by Tigmanshu Dhulia, will execute the attack on the CID team. While other members of the team will survive, ACP Pradyuman will not. And apparently, this scene has already been shot, as stated by insiders.

No Official Reports Regarding ACP Pradyuman’s Exit

As of now, there has been no official confirmation from either the show’s producers or Shivaji Satam himself regarding his exit. The show’s team has remained tight-lipped about any major cast changes.

In past interviews, Satam has expressed deep affection for his role and the show. He once stated, “ACP Pradyuman is not just a character; he’s a part of me now.” This is exactly why it is such a shock to everyone. Why would an actor leave a character he loves so much? That, too a character that played a major role in his acting career.

Impact on Fans

The mere possibility of ACP Pradyuman leaving CID has sparked a wave of reactions online. Hashtags like “#NoPradyumanNoCID” and “#BringBackACP” have trended on social media, showcasing the character’s cultural impact.

Fans fear that without the stern-yet-kind presence of ACP Pradyuman, the show might lose its essence. Many are urging the makers to retain Shivaji Satam or ensure a proper farewell arc if his departure is inevitable.

What’s Next for CID? The Legacy of 20 Years

CID has always evolved with time, introducing new officers and storylines. If ACP Pradyuman does exit, it’s likely the creators will take a careful approach to transition the story. However, replacing a character as iconic as him would be a tall order.

As of now, the exit of ACP Pradyuman from CID remains unconfirmed. Until an official statement is released, all reports should be taken with a grain of salt. One thing is certain—whether he stays or leaves, ACP Pradyuman’s legacy will live on as a cornerstone of Indian television.

Karan Johar’s ‘Kesari 2’ is Based on the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

Karan Johar’s Kesari 2 is Based on the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

Every once in a while, Bollywood comes up with its depiction of a historical event; sometimes it’s accurate, sometimes not. This time, too, it is taking us on a ride to one of the darkest chapters of Indian history, a chapter forgotten by the masses. Filmmaker Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions will be releasing Kesari Chapter 2, a movie based on a court case following the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of April 13th 1919.

The movie stars Akshay Kumar, Ananya Panday and R Madhavan and is supposedly a demand for an apology for the “cold-blooded genocide” once committed by the British Raj. The apology the subcontinent never got.

Revisiting the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre is now a century old, yet we, South East Asians, refuse to forget it. This cold-blooded murder occurred during Baisakhi, a spring harvest festival, resulting in probably the bloodiest Baisakhi that has happened.

The genocide of approximately 500 to 600 people happened during the time of World War 1. It was when the colonial British empire was trying to control the growing nationalist surge in the subcontinent region.

In the Massacre, British Brigadier General Reginald Dyer opened fire on unarmed, peaceful protestors who had gathered there to celebrate the Baisakhi festival. The crowd was also peacefully protesting against the Rowlatt Act, passed by the British government, which limited civil liberties and demanded the release of two nationalist leaders, Saifuddin Kitchlew and Satyapal.

As many as 1,650 rounds of ammunition were fired on unarmed Indians on Sunday, April 13, 1919, at Jallianwala Bagh. The Bagh’s narrow entrance was blocked by 90 soldiers. Nobody, and we literally mean nobody, was spared, not even the kids, the women and the elderly.

Curfew had already been imposed in the city, so even if any of the hundreds of wounded wanted to leave after the brutal act was over, they were just not able to move out of the premises from where blood was flowing uninterruptedly. Thus, many of those who could have been saved succumbed to their injuries.

A narrow passage, which General Dyer used to make his way to the ground along with his soldiers, has been left intact with bullet marks on the walls of few structures and a well in the Jallianwala Bagh.
A narrow passage, which General Dyer used to make his way to the ground along with his soldiers, has been left intact with bullet marks on the walls of a few structures and a well in the Jallianwala Bagh.

The Movie about the Court Case Post Massacre

The film is based on The Case That Shook the Empire: One Man’s Fight for the Truth about the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. This is a book by Raghu and Pushpa Palat that explores the defamation case filed against Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair by Sir Michael O’Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab and the architect of the massacre. After the massacre, Governor O’Dwyer was strongly in support of the actions of General Dyer and declared this as a “rightful action” that needed to be done. He even made defamation allegations after Nair published a book about the atrocities committed by the British Raj in Punjab.

Even in the trailer, we can see Nair getting his face painted by the public due to the defamation plotted against him.

Karan Johar’s Comments

Discussing the historical context, Johar noted that Britain has never issued an official apology, which is tragic and ignorant. He even elaborated that the film was not to provoke anyone or celebrate anyone but was rather an expression of the lack of accountability from our Colonisers- the Colonisers we never signed up for.

“The film we made is neither driven by joy nor sorrow; it is fueled by anger”, said the director.

By bringing this dark chapter to the big screen, the film not only honours the innocent lives lost but also reminds audiences of the sacrifices that shaped India’s fight for independence. With its emotional depth, historical significance, and compelling storytelling, Kesari 2 is set to ignite conversations and leave a lasting impact on viewers around the world.

Now the main question is, how authentic will this film be in its truth? Only the film’s release will be the judge of that.

Pakistan Ranked Among the World’s Weakest Passports

Pakistan Ranked Among the World's Weakest Passports
Pakistan Ranked Among the World's Weakest Passports

Nomad Capitalist, a globally recognised passport ranking organisation, has unveiled its list of the world’s most powerful and weakest passports. While Ireland tops the list, Pakistan remains at a concerning 195th, placing it near the bottom with only a few nations behind it.

The ranking considers multiple factors that contribute to a passport’s power. These include visa-free or visa-on-arrival access, tax policies, allowances for dual citizenship, and overall personal and social freedoms. Ireland, which secured the top spot with 109 points, is able to offer its citizens the freedom to travel to 176 countries without needing a visa. This balanced performance across key areas made Ireland the leader in global passport power.

Read more: How to Apply for a 10-Year Passport in Pakistan

Pakistan, however, stands starkly apart, with one of the weakest passports globally. The country ranks just fifth from the bottom of the list, ahead of only a handful of nations. Pakistani passport holders face significant travel restrictions, being able to access very few countries without requiring a visa. This situation is indicative of the limited global mobility that comes with a Pakistani passport, highlighting a major challenge for citizens who wish to travel internationally for business or leisure.

Other countries, such as Greece and Switzerland, share second place in the rankings with 108 points, while Portugal, Luxembourg, Finland, and Norway follow closely. The UAE, New Zealand, and Iceland hold the tenth position, showcasing their strong passports.

Pakistan’s position near the bottom reflects ongoing issues in travel freedom and citizenship policies. Its citizens continue to face severe limitations when it comes to visa-free travel, making it one of the weakest passports in the world.

The Art of Creative Advertising with Bianca Fernandez

The Art of Creative Advertising with Bianca Fernandez
The Art of Creative Advertising with Bianca Fernandez

Ask any professional about the key to successful advertising, and you’ll likely hear the age-old mantra of Stephan Vogel, Chief Creative Officer at Ogilvy & Mather Germany: “Nothing is more efficient than creative advertising. Creative advertising is more memorable, longer-lasting, works with less media spending, and builds a fan community… faster.” However, not every advertiser possesses the rare skill of creativity in advertising; it’s a gift that develops over time.

Bianca Fernandez’s story mirrors this truth. Currently the Creative Director at DDB (Doyle Dane Bernbach) in the Philippines, a leading creative advertising agency, Fernandez is an award-winning creative who believes deeply in the power of advertising to change the world. A mother, an optimist, and a self-proclaimed meme supplier, her approach to creative advertising has taken her far in the industry.

A Life-Changing Moment

Bianca’s journey into advertising began in an unexpected way. While studying at university, she attended a series of talks, never anticipating how life-changing they would be. “I was initially set on a career in journalism, but while serving on the committee that organised advertising talks for my course, I fell in love with the industry,” Fernandez shared. From the outside, she was captivated by the passion, the freedom to find creative solutions, and the fun of the work. Needless to say, she was hooked.

A Lucky First Break

A crucial aspect of working in advertising is discovering your creative voice, which is often the very reason many people are drawn to the industry. However, finding that voice isn’t always easy. For Fernandez, it came early. Growing up in the Philippines, she noticed how many people were eager to master the English language while neglecting their native tongue. Determined to address this, she and her colleagues embarked on a project to create a reality web series. They learned everything from shooting and editing to scripting and securing locations. “Winning a bronze award for that was my first major achievement. When we stepped onto the stage to accept it, it felt as though we had won a Grand Prix. That experience truly honed my skills and shaped my creative perspective,” she recalled.

Since then, Fernandez has worked on campaigns for countless brands, each time crafting messages that resonate with audiences on a deeper level while meeting marketing objectives. She believes the key to striking that balance is truly understanding your audience. “You must get real insights into who your audience is, then create work that speaks to them in a memorable and relevant way,” she explained.

Creativity in Harmony with Brand Identity

Her ability to understand both the audience and the brands she works with has served her well, particularly as she has collaborated with larger, more established brands. Today, Fernandez works with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Gatorade, Sting, Lipton, and GAC. These are iconic brands with long histories, meaning their marketing must stay fresh while preserving the essence that has made them so successful. For Fernandez, this balance is crucial. “While the way we interact with media may evolve, the core of good advertising remains the same – it’s all about a good story. The platform may change, whether print or digital, but a compelling story will always resonate with the audience,” she noted.

She also believes that no advertising format is truly obsolete. “The gadgets we use to consume content may change, but print ads aren’t dead; they’re just on a screen now,” she said.

A Meme Supplier Turned Advertiser

Working in advertising often means facing rejection, sometimes in large doses. It can be disheartening, even discouraging. However, humour and positivity are invaluable traits in overcoming such setbacks. They allow you to remain resilient, keep evolving, and not take rejection too personally. As a “meme supplier” and optimist, Fernandez believes that without a positive outlook, it’s almost impossible to thrive in the industry. “How can you continue solving problems, evolving, and innovating if you can’t find the light in the darkness? I’m grateful for the people who make me laugh and find joy in the absurd. They keep me sane,” she shared.

The Importance of Recognition

With years of experience under her belt, Fernandez understands the importance of being recognised for your work, especially through awards. She is currently serving on the prestigious jury for the Spikes Asia Awards 2025, a role she sees as a fantastic opportunity for aspiring creatives. “Creative awards, such as those from Spikes Asia, show employers that you are exceptional. They highlight your ability to think outside the box, craft innovative ideas, and drive brand success through your creativity,” she said.

As she moves forward in her career, Fernandez remains excited about what lies ahead. “Every moment in advertising is a privilege. There are so many perks to this industry that you can’t find in other fields, and one of the best is the freedom to take creative risks and solve real-world problems while letting our ‘freak flags’ fly,” she said. However, harnessing creativity isn’t always easy; it requires time, experience, and mentorship. For Fernandez, it’s important to help the next generation of creatives unlock their full potential. “I hope I can teach young creatives how to tap into their endless creativity and become true problem-solvers,” she added.

In a world that is constantly changing, Bianca Fernandez continues to prove that creative advertising is not just about selling a product – it’s about telling a story, connecting with people, and making a lasting impact.

Saud Shakeel Comments on PCB’s Coaching Chaos

saud-shakeel-comments-on-pcb-coaching-chaos

Pakistan’s middle-order batter Saud Shakeel has made a bold statement about the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) revolving-door policy for head coaches.

If he were ever to become PCB chairman, he says, his first order of business would be to appoint a permanent head coach for three years—one who cannot be removed even if the chairman changes.

Now that’s a strong stance! And honestly, he makes a solid point.

Coaching Instability Hurts Players

Pakistan cricket has seen its fair share of coaching musical chairs. One day it’s Misbah-ul-Haq, the next it’s Saqlain Mushtaq, and before you know it, foreign coaches like Mickey Arthur or Grant Bradburn are in charge—only to be replaced again.

Saud believes that this constant change affects players’ performances. And he’s right!

“The change in the coaching setup definitely affects the environment of the dressing room. If I say that it does not affect us at all, I would be lying,” he said.

He explained that players and coaches need time to understand each other. A new coach comes in with his own mindset, preferences, and strategies, which takes time to adjust to. But if the coach is changed frequently, players are left confused.

And guess what? This uncertainty isn’t just in the coaching staff—it reflects in Pakistan’s inconsistent performances too.

A Strong Domestic System = A Stronger Pakistan Team

Saud Shakeel didn’t stop at coaching. He also addressed the financial struggles of Pakistan’s domestic cricketers.

“We need to uplift the standard of domestic cricket in terms of money,” he emphasized.

Many first-class cricketers in Pakistan earn less than top club cricketers in other countries. If we want our domestic structure to produce world-class talent, players must be given financial security. Otherwise, we risk losing talent to other careers or T20 leagues abroad.

Is Saud Shakeel Talking Sense? Absolutely!

Saud Shakeel’s comments highlight two major issues in Pakistan cricket—lack of coaching stability and poor financial support for domestic players.

If Pakistan truly wants to build a dominant cricket team, they need to fix these problems. A long-term head coach can bring consistency, clear planning, and better player development. And investing in domestic cricket means future stars will emerge better trained, more confident, and financially secure.

Sindh Cracks Down on Transporters Overcharging Passengers

The Sindh government has launched a strict crackdown on transporters overcharging passengers returning home after Eidul Fitr. Transport Authorities are taking immediate action to prevent fare exploitation and ensure fair pricing for travellers.

Sindh Minister Sharjeel Memon emphasised that strong measures are in place to stop transporters overcharging passengers. He said the government prioritises protecting public rights and will not allow any bus, coach or any kind of transport service to increase fares unfairly above what is set.

District administrations, police, and the National Highway and Motorway Police are coordinating the crackdown. Transport officials will monitor fares closely and act swiftly against violators. Memon warned that transporters caught overcharging passengers will face legal consequences.

He explained that the campaign aims to relieve citizens from unnecessary financial burden and create a transparent, organised transport system. The government aims to make travel affordable and convenient for all citizens.

Earlier, the Sindh government cancelled the holidays of all officers and staff in the transport department. This decision ensured that transport officials stayed on duty during the festive period to prevent fare exploitation. Authorities deployed staff at major bus terminals and highways to monitor fares and ensure compliance.

Memon reiterated that the Sindh government will not tolerate any exploitation of citizens. He encouraged passengers to report overcharging incidents, so authorities can take swift action.

The Sindh government continues to improve transport regulations and provide relief to passengers. Ensuring fair fares and a smooth travel experience remains a key focus for the provincial administration, as it strengthens its efforts against transporters overcharging passengers.

President Asif Ali Zardari’s Health is Improving, Discharge Expected Soon

President Asif Ali Zardari’s health is improving, and he may be discharged from the hospital in a few days, according to Dr Asim Hussain. Speaking to the media, Dr Asim said that the president is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Karachi. He is under the supervision of infectious disease specialists.

Dr Asim mentioned that the president’s latest blood test reports are positive. “Infectious diseases department experts examine President Asif Zardari three times a day,” he stated, adding that shifting him from Nawabshah to Karachi was the right decision.

Visits to the president have been restricted as a precaution because of COVID-19. Asim assured them that they are regularly informing the president’s family about his health.

President Zardari was moved to Karachi after experiencing health complications. Since then, he has been in isolation under close medical monitoring, with multiple diagnostic tests conducted.

Well Wishes

Several political leaders have expressed their concern and well wishes. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke to the president on the phone, offering prayers and noting that the nation was praying for his recovery. National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq also called Zardari and wished him well. Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori contacted Dr Asim to inquire about the president’s condition and extend his best wishes.

Sindh Minister Sharjeel Memon denied rumours that Zardari would be moved to Dubai for treatment, stating that the president was recovering well.

Meanwhile, President Zardari has pledged to continue Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s mission to make Pakistan a developed and sovereign country. In a statement issued by the President House on the 46th death anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Zardari reaffirmed his commitment to protecting Pakistan’s sovereignty and democracy. He described Bhutto as a great statesman and a true representative of the people.

“Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto gave the nation its first unanimous constitution, laid the foundation of Pakistan’s nuclear programme and established an independent and sovereign foreign policy,” Zardari stated. He also recalled how Bhutto’s leadership led to the Islamic Summit Conference, strengthening Muslim unity.

The president acknowledged Bhutto’s contributions to empowering workers, farmers, and the underprivileged, ensuring their rights. He emphasised that Bhutto’s efforts resulted in significant advancements in education, industry and defense.

Tinder’s AI Flirting Feature Sparks Mixed Reactions Online

Tinder’s AI Flirting Feature Sparks Mixed Reactions Online

Tinder’s AI flirting feature, a new AI-powered feature called The Game Game, has designed to help users practice flirting with a chatbot. Launched on April 1, this feature allows users to engage in flirty scenarios, like meeting someone at an airport baggage claim—and receive ratings based on their performance. The AI uses Tinder’s signature flame icons to score the interaction.

The feature is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-40 model and has drawn a mixed response from users. Some social media users were excited, while others were skeptical. One X user expressed frustration, saying, “AI needs to be stopped.” Another commented, “We’ve had enough with the AI, put it down!”

Others were intrigued by the concept. One user questioned, “So you’re telling me there’s an AI out there that rates how smooth I am? I’m intrigued.” Another asked, “So now it will be AI responses even when flirting?”

Some responses were humorous. A user joked, “Tinder’s ‘game’ just leveled up—time to unleash my inner Chad.” Another quipped, “It’s time to get that top score or delete the game and pretend I never tried.” A different user even compared it to spreadsheets, writing, “So, Tinder’s added an AI to rate my flirting? Guess I’ll need to create a VLOOKUP to find the perfect match. My dating life is now officially an Excel spreadsheet.”

Despite the memes and concerns, Tinder states that the goal is not to replace real-life dating. At the launch event, relationship expert Devyn Simone explained, “The Game Game is intentionally over the top—a low-stakes, playful experience that feels more like improv than a guide to perfect flirting.” She further added, “The AI rewards curiosity and warmth, listening, asking follow-up questions. It’s not about being slick or having the best line, it’s about being human.”

A Tinder spokesperson also clarified that the feature is not meant to be taken too seriously. The app has introduced time limits to ensure users engage in real conversations rather than getting stuck in AI interactions.

Tinder is not the only dating platform experimenting with AI. Other apps like Grindr and Hinge are also working on chatbot-based features. Third-party services like WingAI and Rizz offer AI-generated flirtation advice for users looking to improve their dating game.

Still, some users remain critical of AI’s growing presence in dating. One user summarized the concern by saying, “Practice flirting with AI bots to get you in the mood for flirting with the AI bots on the app. Everybody on the app is already a bot.

As AI continues to shape how people connect online, The Game Game might become a new trend in digital dating or fade away like many app features before it.

$2,300 iPhone? Trump Tariffs Trigger Economic Concerns

$2,300 iPhone? Trump Tariffs Trigger Economic Concerns

Countries around the world are preparing to increase trade tensions with the United States as Donald Trump’s tariffs trigger economic concerns. The decision raised concerns about rising prices in the U.S., the world’s largest consumer market.

On Wednesday, Trump introduced tariffs that led to a sharp decline in global financial markets on Thursday. Other world leaders criticised the move, seeing it as the end of decades of trade liberalisation. There were mixed messages from the White House regarding whether these tariffs were a permanent measure or a negotiation tactic. Trump said, “The tariffs give us great power to negotiate.”

The new U.S. tariffs include a 10% baseline tariff on all imports, with even higher duties on major trading partners. This could lead to increased prices on several consumer goods, including electronics. According to Rosenblatt Securities, if Apple passes on the added costs, a high-end iPhone could cost nearly $2,300.

Businesses are adjusting to the changes. Automaker Stellantis announced temporary layoffs in the U.S. and plant closures in Canada and Mexico. General Motors stated it would boost domestic production.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticised the U.S. for moving away from its role as a leader in international economic cooperation. He said, “The global economy is fundamentally different today than it was yesterday.” Canada announced limited countermeasures in response.

The Global Impact

China and the European Union pledged to retaliate. China faces a 54% tariff, while the EU is subject to a 20% duty. French President Emmanuel Macron called for European countries to stop investing in the U.S. Meanwhile, Japan, South Korea, Mexico and India are delaying any response while seeking negotiations. Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba called the tariffs a “national crisis.”

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned, “It is important to avoid steps that could further harm the world economy.” She urged all parties to resolve trade tensions.

U.S. officials gave conflicting statements. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and trade adviser Peter Navarro insisted the tariffs were not up for negotiation, but Trump later said, “The tariffs give us great power to negotiate.”

Markets suffered significant losses. The Dow fell nearly 4%, the S&P 500 dropped almost 5%, and the Nasdaq declined 6%, marking the worst trading day since March 2020. Companies with overseas production, including Nike and Apple, saw their stocks fall by 14% and 9%, respectively.

Asian markets also struggled, with Japan’s Nikkei down 1.85%. Chinese markets were closed for a holiday. Trump defended the tariffs as a response to trade barriers against U.S. goods. Vice President JD Vance said, “That’s fundamentally what this is about, the national security of manufacturing.”

Some experts believe the tariffs could increase inflation, raise recession risks, and cost American families thousands of dollars. Trump’s move also strains U.S. alliances in Asia. Japan and South Korea, which host U.S. military bases, face 24% and 25% tariffs, while Taiwan faces a 32% tariff.

Canada and Mexico were not targeted in the latest tariffs but already face 25% duties on several goods. The new tariffs on auto imports further strain their trade relationship with the U.S.

Asian Cricket Council Welcomes Mohsin Naqvi as New President

Mohsin Naqvi, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), officially took charge as the new president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on April 3. His appointment marks a new leadership phase for Asian cricket, as announced in a press release by the council.

Indian media had previously reported that the board expected Naqvi to assume the role due to the ACC’s rotation policy. However, in December, Shammi Silva, the head of Sri Lanka Cricket, was appointed as the ACC chairman after Jay Shah transitioned to the ICC presidency on December 1.

A PCB official told in December that the ACC chairmanship would transition to PCB in January 2025. This happened following an agreement made during an ACC meeting in Malaysia.

Optimism for the Future

Naqvi, in his statement from the press release, expressed his gratitude for the new role. He said, “I am deeply honoured to assume the presidency of the Asian Cricket Council.” He highlighted Asia’s central role in world cricket and emphasised working closely with all member boards to expand the game’s reach. “Together, we will unlock new opportunities, foster greater collaboration and take Asian cricket to unprecedented heights,” he added. Naqvi also thanked the outgoing president for his contributions to the ACC.

Shammi Silva, in his farewell statement, said, “It has been a privilege to serve as president of the Asian Cricket Council.” He appreciated the teamwork of the member boards in strengthening the ACC and acknowledged Jay Shah’s leadership. “As I step down, I have full confidence that under Naqvi’s capable leadership, the ACC will continue its remarkable journey and thrive,” he stated.

The press release highlighted that Naqvi aims to focus on unity, innovation and strategic growth to maintain Asia’s cricket dominance. The ACC expressed optimism about the future. They are looking forward to enhanced development programmes, youth engagement and an increased global presence of Asian cricket under his leadership.
