Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto, on Tuesday, inaugurated the first phase of the Karachi Urban Forest Project along Lyari River.
The Lyari River in Karachi expands to over 26 kilometers. Karachi’s urban forest will be planted along both sides of the Lyari Expressway, which begins from Mauripur road to conclude at Sohrab Goth.
In the first phase of the urban forest 10,000 saplings of Chikoo (Sapota or Sapodilla plum), Neem, Sheesham, Sumbal and Babul (acacia) will be planted along Lyari river.
Reportedly, the first phase of the project will be initiated alongside the Lyari River whereas the second phase will be conducted out by planting an urban forest along the Malir River.
This project is for Karachi and I will appreciate if citizens too participate in planting trees -Bilawal Bhutto
The initiative will attract foreigners to come and visit the local spots. Furthermore, it will add to the beauty of the city. These urban forests will be planted across many other cities as well.
Nasir Shah, Sindh’s minister for local government and forests said that due to climate change and the ever-increasing temperature of Karachi, it was necessary to plant more trees. He also urged Karachiites to help in curbing pollution.
