Sanitizer bottles have made it to our monthly shopping list since the very beginning of the pandemic. In fear of not having any in the house, people have been hoarding them, but did you know that sanitizers can be toxic?
We didn’t know either! Toxic sanitizers may contain wood alcohol, methanol, or substances that are dangerous after being absorbed through our skin or have been ingested.
“Methanol is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and should not be used due to its toxic effects,” the FDA alerts in its letter.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has alerted people when the product is being used frequently during the coronavirus pandemic. The officials have focused more on washing your hands often as a safety precaution.

“Consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol should seek immediate treatment, which is critical for the potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning,” says the FDA’s letter.
What Your Symptoms May Look Like Once You’ve Been Exposed to Substantial Methanol:ย
1- Nausea
2- Vomiting
3- Headache
4- Blurred vision
5- Permanent blindness
6- Seizures
7 – Coma
8- Permanent damage to the nervous system
The letter further added, “Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk, young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk for methanol poisoning.”
