PEMRA has recently issued a notification banning the repeat telecasts of two widely watched Pakistani drama serials that had huge audiences across the country some time back.
According to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), the two drama serials did not align with the religious and socio-cultural values of the country and have hence been banned under Section 27 of the PEMRA Ordinance.
Pakistani Dramas That Have Been Banned By PEMRA
PEMRA has banned the repeat telecasts of ARY Digital’s Ishqiya and Hum TV’s Pyar Ke Sadqay. Yes, you read that, right! However, we are not surprised. The storylines of both Ishqiya and Pyar Ke Sadqay are problematic, and something had to be done to stop the media industry from normalizing such vulgarity.
1. Ishqiya
Written by Mohsin Ali Shah and Directed by Badar Mehmood, ARY Digital’s Ishqiya is a typical love story that revolves around obsession, compassion, dishonesty, and revenge. The drama serial featured some very prominent showbiz faces, including the handsome Feroze Khan, Hania Amir – the cutie pie, the ravishing Ramsha Khan, and everyone’s favorite Mirza Gohar Rasheed, who appeared as Hamza, Rumaisa, Hamna, and Azeem respectively.
The sensational drama serial, however, received criticism due to its terrible storyline. After Hamza and Rumaisa got married, Hamza was seen blackmailing Rumaisa’s sister Hamna to wreck her married life as she had refused to marry Hamza initially even though they had been in a relationship for quite some time. Pathetic, right? What was Mr. Fahad Mustafa (the producer) trying to portray through this drama? Such petty content coming from huge well-known production houses like Big Bang Entertainment? UTTERLY DISAPPOINTING.
2. Pyar Ke Sadqay
The storyline of drama serial Pyar Ke Sdqay is equally sickening. Or even more? We leave it on you to decide. Written by Zanjabeel Asim Shah and directed by Farooq Rind, HUM TV’s Pyar Ke Sadqay is a blend of romance and subtle comedy. In the drama serial, Yumna Zaidi and Bilal Abbas were seen sharing the screen as Mahjabeen and Abdullah, respectively.
Some other, very prominent television stars such as Omair Rana, Atiqa Odho, and Yashma Gill have also played supporting roles in the drama serial. Coming towards the storyline, initially, in the series Sarwar (Omair Rana), Abdullah’s stepfather, is seen making romantic approaches towards Mahjabeen. However, Mahjabeen could not be less interested.
Abdullah and Mahjabeen however, get married accidentally (due to unavoidable circumstances), which infuriates Sarwar to the core. Later in the series, Sarwar is not only seen making efforts to ruin Abdullah and Mahjabeen’s relationship but is also seen planning his marriage with Mahjabeen via fraudulent means. Gross, no? We did not expect such disgusting content from Momina Duraid and Moomal Shunaid, who have produced excellent content in the past.
Surprisingly enough, the list does not end here. Another ongoing drama serial Jalan, that is being aired on ARY Digital, has received a lot of criticism from the viewers as the script revolves around Nisha (the main character) who gets attracted to her brother in law and tries to ruin her sister’s marriage. There are high chances for Jalan to get banned as well in case more complaints against the drama serial are received. Meanwhile, PEMRA has threatened the TV channel to review and re-assess the content and storyline of the drama.
What is our media industry doing? Is this all that they have got to offer? What do you think? Let us know in the comment section below.
