Extensive Use Of Phone Affects Our Health In Unprecedented Ways

In today’s fast pacing world, cellphones have become more of a necessity than a luxury. So much so that we often underestimate the ways extensive use of phone attacks our health bit by bit. It works like slow poison. Want to know how? Read ahead!

5  Ways Extensive Use Of Phone Is Affecting Our Health

1. Sleep disorders

As per studies, the blue light spectrum that is formed by our smartphones is capable of limiting the production of melatonin. Melatonin, the sleep-inducing hormone, works as the sleep-wake cycle regulator. Making us tired/sleepy at night and waking us up in the morning, melatonin is rightfully called the ‘hormone of darkness.’ The radiations emitted by our phones limit the production of this hormone, making us vulnerable to sleep disorders such as insomnia.

2. Depression

The extensive use of phones is extremely detrimental to our physical as well as mental health. Given that mental health is as important as our physical health, we should not underestimate the damage that excessive use of smartphone causes to our mental wellbeing. Are you not guilty of scrolling through your Instagram feeds for hours? Don’t you check your friend’s Snapchat stories regularly?

Well, we all do. However, this mindless scrolling through the happy snaps shared by your friends inevitably makes your mind a breeding ground for insecurities and self-doubt. Social media always portrays a deceptive image of the seemingly perfect lives of others while making you feel deprived on a deeper level. This can make you prone to extreme clinical depression or other mood disorders.

3. Chronic Pain

Have you ever paid heed to your posture when you sit all day using your cell phone? No? Well, you should! If you really want to know why your back hurts like hell when you spend almost half of your day glued to the phone. Carrying the phone in both our hands puts us into a weird posture without us realizing it. This causes extreme chronic neck and back pain making us feel restless for the rest of the day.

4. EyeSight Problems

According to research, excessive exposure to the blue light emitted by our phones (and other devices such as laptops and tablets) can have detrimental effects on our eyes. It can prove to be poisonous for our photoreceptor cells and can damage them to such an extent that we may become susceptible to eye vision problems — most commonly the loss of eyesight (to a significant bit if not entirely). Also, staring at a small screen for a long time puts a lot of strain on our eyes, which is again ‘extremely harmful.’

5. Cancer

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (which is, by the way, a part of WHO), it’s safe to assume that the radiofrequency electromagnetic fields that are radiated by our cellphones can possibly be cancer-causing agents because there is some evidence that suggests that extensive usage of phones can increase the risk of glioma. Glioma is a brain tumor that is usually (but not necessarily) malignant and can spread. If the patient is lucky enough, it may as well be treated via radiation therapy.

So, are you planning to give up on the guilty pleasure of using your phone extensively? Let us know in the comment section below!
