Audi and FAW have now started a joint-venture by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the joint production of Audi’s e-Tron car in China.
The automotive manufacturers will mass-produce Audi’s electric cars under a new company. The vehicles will be PPE-based (Premium Platform Electric; jointly developed with Porsche) Audi EVs by 2024.
This strategic move, for Audi, is a chance to further advance its transportation into one of the largest automotive markets.
Audi is currently aiming to target at least 1/3 of sales in China through electric cars by 2025.
Audi China president Werner Eichhorn said:
This is a further milestone in our electrification strategy for the Chinese market. We are also confirming our commitment both to our longstanding Chinese partner FAW and to our activities in China, which we are now taking to a new level.
Currently at present, Audi and FAW have a total of 4 production facilities across China. All four can produce a total of 700,000 units per annum.
Moreover, these production facilities are currently producing the Audi Q2L e-Tron and A6L TFSI e plug-in hybrid. The e-SUV has been under production in Changchun since end-September. Before this, thee-Tron was being imported.
Additionally, more e-Tron models are planned to be localized and introduced in China. During the first nine months of 2020, Audi successfully delivered 512,081 vehicles to customers in China alone.
This shows a 4.5% increase in demand over the same period in 2019. 2020 in China has been one of the best performances for Audi in the past 30-years in the country.
