Whenever we go out to buy a vehicle, we must always keep certain factors in mind. Buying a car can be an entire ritual and one should be careful. After all, you are making a huge investment and it should pay off over the long term. If that is not happening, maybe there is a loophole in your selection criteria. So, what about when buying an SUV?
These are huge vehicles with state-of-the-art technology embedded within them. They not only give the best drive in terms of comfort but in safety as well. SUVs are considered the king of the road and buying them must be a careful process. So, here we have a couple of tips that you must keep in mind for buying the right SUV.
1. The Seating
It comes as an obvious statement that seats are a necessity. To be specific, good and comfortable ones are the way to go. You don’t want to spend all that cash and then have a bad back while driving long hours. You want to have the best experience when it comes to seating. Comfortable ones that get you through tough road trips make for good SUV selection criteria.
2. Cargo Storage
If you are buying an SUV, maybe you have a huge storage application. However, what would be the point of an SUV if it does not suit your storage needs. Always make sure there is enough space to accommodate your needs. Travelling requires a lot of space and this should be a good criterion for buying an SUV.
3. 2WD vs. 4WD vs. AWD
The application of your commute can determine which configuration you want to go for. If you have a lot of travelling on highways and roads, then maybe 2WD is a good option for you. However, if you are buying an SUV for off-roading, then 4WD is your best option. You want to make sure all four wheels are running on power if you ever get stuck in sand or between rocks. Safety should always be considered.
4. Towing:
When driving such a vehicle, there is a lot of engine power that comes with it. Apart from the storage space of the vehicle, one should always check the towing range. It counts a lot as to how much weight your vehicle can pull. If the towing winch cannot pull your own vehicle out, what good is all that engine power? Additionally, you never know when someone else may need help with towing. Thus, it is recommended to check towing capability.
5. Mileage
Now, this is one of the most important parts of buying an SUV. You don’t want to buy one which gives you a fuel average of 5 kilometres to the litre. A person should always make sure that the vehicle gives a decent fuel average. Anything above 10 km/L is considered good but if it’s beyond 12, that is even better.
6. Performance and Handling:
There have been many SUVs in history with bad handling. While their centre of gravity is more stable, there are some that don’t hold well. You don’t want to topple or slide when driving at a sharp turn. Make sure you read up on the performance metrics of the vehicle. If possible, take a trained friend along for inspection, or a mechanic.
7. Personal Preference:
While this may not be a visual or perceptive metric, it is an important one. The main question that arises is: do you want to buy an SUV. It is a hefty investment and it requires maintenance. One has to be willing to take care of it when they do buy it.
