Hi-tech prayer mats can refer to prayer mats that incorporate technology, such as sensors or electronic components, to enhance the prayer experience. At the two Holy Mosques (Al-Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina), prayer mats have been introduced that have been designed with modern technology to provide additional features. These carpets are designed in Saudi Arabia to meet certain criteria and technical specifications so that they can meet the needs of pilgrims and visitors.
The high-tech prayer mats have been equipped with a radio-frequency identification (RFID) system to facilitate the worshippers while praying. Around 25,000 of these mats placed in Masjid-e-Nabawi, have an RFID chip installed which is linked to an electronic system. This system contains information about the carpets’ manufacture date, use history, location, and timing of washing.
The RFID system helps the authorities to identify and automate the process of identification of such mat which needs cleaning and washing at their due time.

Advanced Technology Prayer Mats Manufacturing
The mats are composed of a unique cloth that is 16 millimeters thick, the ideal density to keep worshippers comfortable while they are praying.
A pure acrylic yarn with a height of 14 millimeters and 575,000 knots per square meter is also used to cover the mats. The mats are the perfect fit for the mosque because of their extended lifespan and low maintenance requirements.
The Makkah’s director of carpet cleaning, Jaber Ahmed Al-Wada’ani, revealed to Arab News last year that the production of the new floor coverings took 11 months.
“In the past, the carpets of the Makkah Grand Mosque used to be imported from Germany, Belgium, and Lebanon for so many years. From 1999 to 2000, carpet importing was stopped, and the first batch of carpets was established in the Makkah factory,” he said.
“These carpets are made from 100 percent pure acrylic yarn. The pile weighs 400 grams, and its height reaches 14 millimeters. The total height of one carpet is 16 millimeters.”
Cleaning & Maintenance
Cleaning and maintenance issues are continuously observed, and personnel at the mosque routinely sweep, sterilize, and perfume all the carpets during a 24-hour cycle.
The carpets, which have a characteristic moss green tone, undergo several cleaning processes throughout the year as the laundry provides the Grand Mosque with 2,000 fresh carpets each week.
