The Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9 is facing a wave of disruptions as several players have opted out of the tournament at the eleventh hour due to various reasons, causing upheaval among the teams.
Karachi Kings, in particular, find themselves in a tight spot with the limited availability of two crucial overseas players, Tabraiz Shamsi and Jamie Overton.
English all-rounder Jamie Overton’s absence is another blow to Karachi Kings. Withdrawn by his county, Surrey, for the entire season of PSL 9, Overton’s departure is aimed at ensuring his readiness for the County Championship starting on April 5.
Surrey’s decision stems from concerns over the all-rounder’s participation in multiple franchise leagues this season, including the Big Bash League in Australia and the ILT20 in the UAE. Overton also faced a minor shoulder injury scare during his stint in the ILT20.
Shamsi, the South African wrist-spinner, is set to depart the PSL on March 6 to honour domestic T20 commitments, leaving a significant gap in the team’s bowling lineup for the latter part of the tournament.
The impact of Cricket South Africa’s policy is felt by Lahore Qalandars, with Rassie van der Dussen required to return home on March 6, significantly affecting the team’s lineup for the latter part of the season.
Meanwhile, England took precautionary measures by withdrawing the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for English fast bowler Recce Topley, slated to represent Multan Sultans.
Topley’s withdrawal was prompted by a minor injury sustained during the SA20, raising concerns about his fitness for the tournament.
