Shane Watson, the former Australian cricket star, was rumoured to be appointed as the head coach of the Pakistan cricket team with a record-high salary. The deal could not be finalized, however, he became the highest-paid coach in the history of PSL.
Initially touted to potentially become the highest-paid coach in Pakistan cricket history, Watson’s rumoured monthly salary of over four crore rupees, equivalent to two million dollars annually, captured attention.
Reports suggested that Quetta Gladiators paid him a fee of $150,000 for his coaching services during the PSL, which is equivalent to approximately 4 crore and 20 lakh rupees.

During his 28-day stay in Pakistan for the event, Watson earned a daily fee of approximately 15 lac rupees. Despite being offered a substantial salary, his coaching tenure saw mixed results and raised questions about his effectiveness.
Quetta Gladiators managed to qualify for the playoffs but faced a one-sided defeat against Islamabad United in the Eliminator 1. Criticism also arose regarding Watson’s coaching style and the team’s overall strategy under his guidance, casting doubts on his potential return as the head coach of Quetta Gladiators in future PSL seasons.
Meanwhile, team mentor Vivian Richards’ compensation was reduced to $75,000 post-COVID from an initial amount of up to $100,000.
Additionally, former coach and current team director Moin Khan had a contract starting at $50,000, with an additional bonus of $10,000 each for reaching the playoffs and final matches.
Despite the financial investments made by team owner Nadeem Omar, Watson’s stint highlighted the complexities and challenges of coaching in the competitive landscape of T20 cricket, emphasizing the importance of both skill and strategy in achieving success on the field.
