The history of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan has been marred by political tensions, with the last bilateral series occurring in the 2012/13 season.
Since then, both teams have only faced off in multi-team tournaments, with India declining to visit Pakistan due to security concerns.
Moreover, India’s reluctance to travel to Pakistan led to the Asia Cup 2023 being co-hosted with Sri Lanka. The tournament was initially planned to be hosted entirely in Pakistan.
Amid swirling speculations surrounding India’s participation in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to hosting the prestigious tournament in Pakistan.
Addressing the media during the PSL 9 final, Naqvi disclosed that he recently engaged in discussions with BCCI secretary Jay Shah at the ICC meetings in Dubai. However, he chose not to divulge the specifics of their conversation.
“Yes we spoke for a while and it was cordial but it would be unwise to divulge details of what was discussed,” Naqvi said.
While queried about the possibility of relocating the Champions Trophy due to India’s reservations, Naqvi dismissed any such notions, asserting the tournament will remain in Pakistan as scheduled.
“I am not even thinking along those lines; we are confident we will host the Champions Trophy on schedule in Pakistan,” Naqvi asserted firmly.
Highlighting the PCB’s readiness to tackle challenges leading up to the Champions Trophy, Naqvi outlined plans for stadium renovations in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi to elevate the fan experience.
“Plans have been drawn up, and work will begin soon on these three stadiums to give the fans the best experience of watching the matches at the venues,” Naqvi revealed.
The upcoming Champions Trophy, set to commence in 2025, signifies the return of the tournament after a hiatus since 2017.
The last edition, held in England, saw Pakistan emerge as champions, and anticipation is high for the tournament’s revival.
