The amazing spectacle of a solar eclipseโ€”a rare occurrence in which the moon obscures the sun and casts a shadow over Earthโ€”is brought about by the dance of celestial entities. Because of Pakistan’s geographic location, stargazers rarely get to enjoy this sight of beauty. Even though it’s a rare phenomenon to spot in Pakistan, here is the best way to observe a solar eclipse safely without damaging your eyes, if you ever get a chance.

What Is A Solar Eclipse?

When the moon moves in front of Earth and the sun, it causes a temporary veil to cover the sun’s face, known as a solar eclipse. The fact that this phenomenon is uncommon in Pakistan adds to its attraction and makes astronomy aficionados eagerly await it every chance they get. Its truly a sight to behold in all its glory, but even the infamous story of Icarus, sets an example on how dangerous the sun can really be.

One crucial aspect unites scientific guidance with our traditional way of thinking: avoid looking directly at the sun at any time of the eclipse. We have grown up hearing stories from our elders on how dangerous the sight can really be if not viewed safely. Studies have shown, the strong sun radiation can cause lasting eye damage to anyone directly viewing the spectacle. I, for one have seen it’s affects first-hand through my grand-mother who had merely glimpsed the reflection of an eclipse in her prime and had her vision permanently damaged as a result.

How Can You Capture/ View Such A Spectacle?

In the digital age, one might believe smartphonesย  as a convenient medium for eclipse viewing. They offer a digitized image of the eclipse, eliminating the risk of direct eye damage. However, without proper precautions, the intense solar rays can harm the phoneโ€™s camera even if it doesn’t damage your eyes.

But not to fret, for those wishing to immortalize the moment, photographing the eclipse with a smartphone is possible. Yet, the deviceโ€™s limited resolution compared to the human eye necessitates additional tools, such as lenses equipped with solar filters, to safeguard the camera and enhance image detail.

If we were to simply point it towards the rare occurrence, one might not only risk damaging the lens, but the detail would be so minute, it would be difficult to view it clearly. Similar eye protection is required for cameras during eclipses, just as ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses shield the eyes. It is essential to use a sun filter to shield the phone’s camera sensor from harm.

Other Methods And Tips!

Finding the best spot is essential to catching the magnificence of the eclipse. Selecting the ideal location not only guarantees security but also improves the quality of the shot. Aside from smartphones, there are other safe methods to observe a solar eclipse in Pakistan, including pinhole projectors and live streams from reputable sources.

Pakistan will witness the closest eclipse in September, gracing the skies with a partial lunar eclipse, and there’s a chance to experience a total solar eclipse in the subsequent month of October. Let’s be ready to see this natural wonder with care and amazement as the next solar eclipse approaches in 2024, using both conventional viewing techniques and contemporary technology to take in the celestial phenomena.
