Pace bowler Hasan Ali has once again found himself thrust into the limelight as he earns a surprise recall to the Pakistan team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.
The national selection committee has included Hasan Ali in the squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, marking his return to the T20I team after a two-year absence.
With Hasan Ali’s selection raising eyebrows among cricket enthusiasts, questions have emerged regarding the rationale behind his comeback, especially considering his prolonged absence from the national side and his average performances in recent times.
Despite his taking 14 wickets in 10 matches for Karachi Kings during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season nine, critics argue that there were other bowlers who were more deserving of a place in the squad.
Addressing the concerns surrounding his selection, selector Wahab Riaz clarified that the right-arm pacer has been included in the squad based on his experience and as a contingency option for the injured Haris Rauf.
“Hasan Ali was already part of our plans for the T20 World Cup 2024. He serves as a backup for Haris Rauf, and we have communicated this to Hasan Ali,” stated Riaz.
“If Haris becomes fit before the England series, he will be our first choice. However, if we determine that Haris Rauf is unfit, Hasan Ali will step in as his replacement.”
Despite the selector’s explanation, cricket fans on social media expressed scepticism and dissatisfaction with Hasan Ali’s return to the national squad.
Many individuals took to social media to express their thoughts. Some pointed out Hasan Ali’s ‘King karlega’ interview and suggested that his close association with Babar Azam may have contributed to his selection.
