Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter, Mohammad Rizwan, showcased his batting prowess in a spectacular unbeaten inning of 75 runs off just 46 balls during Pakistan’s seven-wicket victory over Ireland in the second T20I.
His outstanding performance earned him the coveted Man of the Match award, marking his 12th such accolade in T20Is.
Rizwan’s exceptional batting display not only contributed to Pakistan’s triumph but also highlighted his impressive batting average, making him only the second player in T20I history to boast an average of 50+. Joining the illustrious ranks alongside former Indian captain Virat Kohli, Rizwan’s average stands at an impressive 50.38, while Kohli’s is 51.75.
However, Rizwan’s bold statement after the match caught everyone’s attention, asserting that any player who plays for the average inevitably becomes an average player themselves.
During the post-match conference, he acknowledged the significance of focusing on the game’s demands rather than fixating solely on individual statistics.
Drawing inspiration from Kohli, Rizwan emphasized the importance of adapting to match situations and conditions to excel as a cricketer.
“If you look at the average, you are an average player. If you look at the conditions and what the game demands, that will make you better. We have learned a lot of things from Virat Kohli, I respect him,” Rizwan remarked, reflecting on his approach towards batting.
Rizwan also praised the resilience of the Ireland bowlers and highlighted the mindset adopted by the Pakistan batters during the chase. Despite the initial pressure, Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman orchestrated a remarkable partnership to steer Pakistan towards victory.
“They played really well against us. It was not an easy chase because the Ireland bowlers knew their conditions better, they gave us a difficult time early on, but we decided that chasing 194, we have to attack,” Rizwan stated, acknowledging the team’s collective effort.
