Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has taken a strong stance against Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi, urging him to focus on one position at a time.
Afridi’s remarks came after Naqvi mentioned seeking advice from former cricketers and white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten to improve Pakistan cricket following their poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Mohsin Naqvi’s Plan Under Fire
During a media interaction recently, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi was asked about the steps he plans to take to uplift Pakistani cricket.
Naqvi responded that he would consult former players and Kirsten before making any decisions. This did not sit well with Afridi, who openly criticized Naqvi’s approach.
“Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi will be able to do nothing if he runs PCB on the suggestions of advisors because the advisors of Chairman PCB are incompetent and have no knowledge about cricket,” Afridi said.
Bold Statement By Shahid Afridi
Afridi didn’t hold back, questioning the competence of Naqvi’s advisors and suggesting that relying on them would be futile.
He stressed that the PCB chairman needs to be decisive and take matters into his own hands. He also asked Mohsin Naqvi to focus on one job at a time.
“Mohsin Naqvi is Interior Minister as well as Chairman PCB. This is the right time for him to choose one job!” Afridi declared.
The Call for Change
Afridi’s criticism highlights the growing frustration within the cricket community over the management of the sport in Pakistan.
The calls for wholesale changes have been growing louder since the team’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. Many believe that effective leadership is crucial for turning things around.
As the PCB faces mounting pressure to improve the state of cricket in the country, it remains to be seen how Naqvi will respond to Afridi’s pointed comments and whether he will consider stepping down from one of his roles to focus on the other.
