Since National Dumpling Day is just around the corner, let us celebrate the different fillings you can find all around the world. Dumplings are a delicious snack, usually steamed and filled with a mix of minced chicken and veggies. Locally, the closest thing to dumplings is traditional momos.

1. Wontons from China

Wontons are one of the most well-known dumplings, thanks to their frequent appearances in movies and dramas. These dumplings have a thin dough wrapping and are often served in soups. The filling typically includes ground pork, cabbage, and minced garlic for an extra flavor boost. Wontons are the most popular during New Year in China.

2. Uszka Dumpling from Poland

Meaning “little ears” in Polish, these are small, ring-shaped dumplings traditionally filled with meat and mushrooms. Uszka are super tasty dumplings and these too are highly popular during Christmas Eve celebrations. Plus, their unique ear-like shape makes them a delightful addition to meals.

3. Tortellini from Italy

The Italians have their own version of dumplings, tortellini. These small dumplings are filled with ingredients like meat, cheese, mushrooms, or spinach. Tortellini is often served in a rich beef broth. Additionally, these can be enjoyed on their own too.

4. Svetskove Knedliky from the Czech Republic

The dish that no one can pronounce, is a traditional Czech dish. It features a sweet twist! Svetskove Knedliky are dumplings filled with whole fruits like plums, topped with sugar, and served with curd cheese. These little treats are a delicious dessert or snack in the Eastern European region.

5. Samosa from India

Who doesn’t love a fresh crispy somasa? They are made with a thick dough wrapping and are usually filled with spicy mashed potatoes. Furthermore, other fillings like boiled vegetables, chicken, or minced meat are also common.

6. Rissois Dumpling from Portugal

dumpling Rissois, or rissoles, are half-moon-shaped, breaded dumplings filled with fish or shrimp in a creamy bechamel sauce. Other variations include fillings like minced ham or chicken. Moreover, these snacks are loved by both young and old in Portugal.

7. Vareniky from Ukraine


Ukrainian varenyky are versatile dumplings that can be either savory or sweet. They are traditionally filled with meat, dill, cheese, onions, and peppers, and served with sour cream. Sweet varieties feature fruits like cherries or blueberries, making them a treat for any occasion.

8. Pelmeni from Russia

Pelmeni are crescent-shaped dumplings filled with meat, cheese, or mushrooms. These savory dumplings were first created in Siberia and are a hearty meal.

9. Maultaschen Dumpling from Germany


Maultaschen, from the Swabian region of Germany, are dumplings with a pasta dough exterior and a filling of sausage, spinach, bread crumbs, and spices.  These are pretty much the same thing as ravioli.

10. Manti from Turkey

Manti are Turkish dumplings found across Central Asia. These dumplings are filled with spiced ground lamb or beef, seasoned with black pepper, and served with yogurt sauce or butter. They are considered some of the most delicious dumplings in the world.

These variations of the same food in every culture are a reminder of how connected we are!
