The sudden resignation of former captain Mohammad Yousuf as a selector for the Pakistan men’s cricket team has raised a lot of eyebrows. The former batting legend made the announcement on Sunday, and considering he’d only been in the role since March 2024, the timing caught many by surprise. The Resignation
Mohammad Yousuf announced the decision through a heartfelt post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, shocking the fans and media alike. He said he was stepping down for “personal reasons” and took the opportunity to thank the team for the time he spent with them.
“I announce my resignation as a selector for the Pakistan cricket team due to personal reasons. Serving this incredible team has been a profound privilege, and I am proud to have contributed to the growth and success of Pakistan Cricket,” Yousuf wrote.
“I have immense faith in the talent and spirit of our players, and wish our team all the best as they continue to strive for greatness,” he added.”
Trouble Behind the Scenes
Although Yousuf gave a straightforward reason for his resignation, the real details about his sudden exit came out later in the day.
Apparently, Yousuf wasn’t exactly seeing eye to eye with Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s Test team coach. Now, if you’ve been following cricket, you’ll know that Gillespie is a no-nonsense, stability-loving kind of guy. Yousuf, on the other hand, is all about spotting talent and making bold moves.
Yousuf wanted to give some new blood a chance in the upcoming Test series against England. He was particularly keen on getting guys like Kamran Ghulam and Zahid Mahmood into the mix after they showed their good form in the Champions Cup.
But Gillespie wanted to maintain stability in the team and denied the changes Yousuf wanted. Meanwhile, the team captain Shan Masood and Asad Shafiq (a member of the selection committee) supported Gillespie.

Abdullah Shafique And Central Contract Debate
Abdullah Shafique had a rough time in the series against Bangladesh, and Yousuf felt he needed a break to work on his game. But Gillespie thought it would be better to stick with him, seeing his potential as a long-term asset for the team.
To add fuel to the fire, the two also didn’t agree on how central contracts should be handled. Yousuf was all about performance-based contracts, making sure players earn their keep. Gillespie, on the other hand, seemed a little more relaxed, preferring to give guys more breathing room.
With these mounting disagreements, Yousuf chose to walk. He’s a straight shooter and probably realized this was a battle he wasn’t going to win.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) accepted his resignation wholeheartedly with their standard “thank you for your service” press release. They praised Yousuf for his contributions and mentioned that he’s going to focus on “other key responsibilities” within the board.
