Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has recently suggested two potential candidates to take over the white-ball captaincy after Babar Azam resigned from the position.
The legendary batter supported Babar Azam’s decision to relinquish captaincy. “Stepping away from the captaincy will be good for Babar,” Younis said during his recent visit to Australia’s Adelaide Oval.
Who Should Be The Next Captain?
Younis suggested that either wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan or left-handed opener Fakhar Zaman should take over the leadership role. The former captain disagreed with the notion that the best player in the team should be the captain.
“In our culture, we often make the best player the captain, but that can sometimes be a mistake. Rizwan or Fakhar should be the ones to take over,” he stated.
Rizwan has been calm under pressure and is a proven leader in domestic cricket. That consistency and level-headedness are qualities you want in a skipper.
Then there’s Fakhar Zaman. He may not have a ton of leadership experience, but his aggressive, fearless style of play could be just what the team needs to inject some energy.

What’s Next for Pakistan Cricket?
Younis Khan also pointed out a few issues within Pakistan’s team selection. With a mix of young talent and some questionable selections lately, he voiced concerns about how the team’s being put together.
I hope the Pakistan men’s cricket team performs well in Australia. The current squad includes young players, and there are certainly some issues with team selection that need to be addressed,” he said.
Younis Khan Praises Jason Gillespie
Younis Khan also heaped praise on Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s red-ball head coach, saying that he has a ton of respect for him.
He praised Gillespie’s hard work in improving the team but also reiterated that better selection decisions could take Pakistan even further.

“I have played cricket with Jason Gillespie; he is working hard to improve the Pakistan team,” Younis said.
“But there needs to be better decision-making when it comes to selection.” So, while there’s love for the coaching efforts, Younis is clearly calling for more thoughtful planning overall.
