Safari Park elephant Sonia dies

An African elephant, Sonia, who recently reunited with her sister Madhubala, has died in Karachi Safari Park, the park announced on Sunday. Sonia, who had been in good health during her last check-up about 10 days ago, passed away unexpectedly. The Austrian NGO Four Paws visited her at the end of November. The news is particularly sensitive in Pakistan, where mistreatment of animals is a common concern. Sonia had recently reunited with her sister after 15 years of separation. Madhubala had been relocated from Karachi Zoo to the Safari Park.

Following the death of Noor Jehan, Four Paws criticized the zoo’s medical team and advocated for Madhubala’s transfer to the Safari Park, which activists claim offers better conditions for the animals. “Today, after the death of Sonia, we have two elephants left,” said the park director.
