On Monday, Artificial Intelligence giant, OpenAI, released the latest version of its highly anticipated Sora video generator to the public. Earlier, Sora was released to specific artists, filmmakers and safety testers in February. However, this version offers notable upgrades, and speed improvements and can generate high-definition videos up to 22 seconds long.
Sora is a text-to-video generator tool that can create AI video clips based on a userโs written prompts. For instance, OpenAI’s website has the prompt of โa wide, serene shot of a family of woolly mammoths in an open desertโ as an example. Its video shows a group of three mammoths slowly walking through sand dunes.

Taking Over the AI Industryย
Although other tech giants like Meta and Google have launched their AI tools, none surpassed the high expectations that were created by the launch of ChatGPT two years ago. Even though today, OpenAI is most known for ChatGPT, it is continually branching into other forms of generative AI. It is currently working on a voice cloning tool and has also integrated an image generation tool into ChatGPT’s functions.
How will Sora Change the World?
Tech reviewer Marques Brownlee tested Sora before its release and called the technology, “horrifying and inspiring at the same time.โย Brownless further added that Sora performed very well with landscapes and stylistic effects but it did struggle to realistically depict basic physics.
The abilities and potential of Sora have quickly attracted attention from the tech industry, business sector and investment community. However, just as the launch of ChatGPT impacted industries and they began to change their operations, similar things will happen now after the introduction of Sora. Judging from the reactions online, professionals in the film and television industry are beginning to worry that the industry will be severely impacted by AI in the future, and even their livelihoods will be taken over by AI.ย This significant impact on the global film and television industry is unavoidable.
Safety Measures
With a tool like Sora in the market now, the dangers of misuse will always be lingering around. Currently, OpenAI is trying its best to cater to the potential misuse of the tool. OpenAI has implemented several safeguards, such as metadata verification and visible watermarks. It is also temporarily restricting the generation of videos featuring real people to avoid deepfake content.
With its launch, Sora has already created hype in the tech world and outside. While the dangers of AI video generating remain, this could be a groundbreaking step into the future of technology.
