Travellers Limited to $1,200 Worth of Goods Under New FBR Rules

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has implemented more strict baggage limits, limiting the value of goods brought by international travellers to $1,200. Items exceeding this limit will be considered commercial trade goods and subject to customs, taxesย and penalties. Additionally, the new regulations limit travellers to using one cell phone for personal use; any more phones will be seized. These procedures are intended to prevent the smuggling and commercial usage of personal luggage.

The FBR has proposed revisions to the Baggage Rules 2006 and has asked stakeholders for feedback within seven days. A gazette notification will be used to enact the revised regulations if no significant modifications are made. These measures are meant to increase transparency in customs procedures and prevent unauthorised imports.
