In a statement released by the World Championship of Legends (WCL), he said, โFour years ago, I retired from all cricket because I just didnโt feel the urge to play anymore. Well, time has passed, and my young sons have started playing the game… it feels as though some kind of flame has been lit again.โ
And now, he’s not just returning for fun; heโs heading back to the gym and nets to gear up for a competitive outing in July.
The Big Stage: World Championship of Legends 2025
De Villiers will lead the South Africa Champions in the second edition of the World Championship of Legends (WCL), a thrilling T20 tournament featuring retired and non-contracted players representing their countries.
The inaugural WCL in 2024 saw Team India, captained by the iconic Yuvraj Singh, lift the trophy. With de Villiers at the helm, South Africa Champions aim to go all the way this time.
