Lahore has taken a major step towards eco-friendly public transport with the launch of Punjabโs first fully electric bus service. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the service, which aims to provide a modern, safe and efficient commuting experience.
The new electric buses, each with a capacity of 80 passengers, are designed to ensure comfort and accessibility. They are equipped with GPS tracking, Wi-Fi, USB charging ports and ramps for passengers with disabilities. Safety measures include anti-slip flooring and onboard cameras to prevent harassment.

To support the service, nine specialised charging stations have been established, allowing each bus to travel up to 250 kilometres when fully charged. The buses will initially operate on a 21-kilometre route from the Railway Station to Green Town, running every nine minutes. By mid-February, 42 modern bus shelters will be installed along the route to enhance passenger convenience. The service is expected to accommodate 17,000 commuters daily.
The Chief Minister also reviewed additional upgrades for bus stations, including the installation of solar fans, water coolers and surveillance cameras. She emphasised the importance of special training for the 70 drivers operating the fleet. Additionally, discussions are underway for the potential introduction of electric taxis in Punjab as part of the governmentโs broader plan for sustainable urban transport.
