Former finance minister Miftah Ismail has criticised the government for imposing taxes on those earning Rs 50,000 per month while leaving large farmland owners out of the tax net. Speaking on Tuesday, he said Pakistan is going through a critical economic period, yet the government is inviting businessmen to buy Rs 50 million plots under an amnesty scheme.

He claimed that the country has not received any foreign investment in the last 20 years. “Who will invest when your tax rates are the highest in the world?” he questioned. Miftah argued that excessive taxation discourages investment, making economic recovery difficult.

He also pointed out shifting political stances on the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). “Earlier, Shehbaz Sharif opposed PECA while the PTI founder supported it. Today, Shehbaz backs it and PTI is against it,” he remarked.
