“Wherever I go, everyone asks me why I vanished,” Haroon wrote in his Instagram post. “I’ve been extremely busy working on passion projects, and along the way, music became secondary.”
Haroon has been experimenting with production and direction in the past few years, ultimately setting up Unicorn Black Production. His foray from singer-songwriter to content creator began when he was working on music videos, so he diversified into TV shows, film and animation.
The Success of Burka Avenger
Haroon’s move into animation earned him global recognition with the production of Burka Avenger in 2013. The Peabody Award-winning, Emmy-nominated superhero show was a global hit, earning several seasons and widespread popularity.
“I never thought I’d stop making music”, Haroon confessed, “but when Burka Avenger exploded, it was beyond me.” The impact of the show guaranteed Haroon’s place as a trailblazer in animation storytelling, demonstrating that his creative vision had scope well beyond music.
A Much-Awaited Comeback
Although he concentrates on animation, Haroon has come back to music periodically, performing the Burka Avenger theme song Baba Bandook with Ali Azmat and releasing Dhundoonga in 2020. He also performed with Azmat, Arif Loha and Asim Azhar for the Pakistan Super League anthem Tayyar Hain the same year.
