Conclave Gains Momentum
The critically acclaimed Conclave, which includes Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini, traces the dramatic Vatican battle over electing a new pope. The film has just been awarded the SAG Award for Best Ensemble as well as the BAFTA top award. This makes it a likely Oscar nominee for Best Picture on March 2.
In his acceptance speech, Fiennes stressed the significance of community in both filmmaking and life. Rossellini, on her part, had a moment of expressing concern regarding the real-world issue of 88-year-old Pope Francis. Francis is currently in critical condition with double pneumonia. “We are very, very worried for our pope,” she said in an interview. “We love this pope.”
Chalamet’s Surprising Win
Timothée Chalamet achieved a surprise win in the Best Actor category, taking home the award for playing a young Bob Dylan in ‘A Complete Unknown.’ This win spoiled the expected winner Adrien Brody, who had been reigning supreme during the awards season with his performance in The Brutalist.
In his acceptance speech, the 29-year-old Chalamet expressed his relentless pursuit of excellence. “The truth is, I’m really in pursuit of greatness,” he said. “I want to be one of the greats.” His win has now injected uncertainty into the Oscars’ Best Actor race, making him a formidable competitor.
Other Notable Wins
Demi Moore took Best Actress for playing an ageing starlet in The Substance, looking back on her years of experience as an actress and the importance that acting has had in her life. Supporting wins went to Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) and Zoe Saldana (Emilia Perez).
On television, FX’s Shogun took home the Best Drama Ensemble award and Only Murders in the Building grabbed Best Comedy Ensemble. The prize was collected with humour by Selena Gomez, who mocked her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, whose absence they noticed: “They don’t care!” she chuckled, much to the audience’s amusement.
