If you’re a Harry Potter buff, I’m sure you know about the new series reboot set to come out in early 2027. This long-awaited series on HBO keeps heating up as two more legendary roles are said to be close to being cast.
After the confirmation of John Lithgow as Professor Albus Dumbledore, reports state that Janet McTeer and Paapa Essiedu are in talks to play Professor Minerva McGonagall and Professor Severus Snape, respectively.
McTeer as Professor McGonagall
McTeer, who has made memorable appearances in Tumbleweeds and Albert Nobbs, has decades of acting experience to her credit. Her repertoire includes both film and television, including hit shows such as Ozark and Jessica Jones. McTeer’s poised demeanor is well-suited for the wise and compassionate role of Professor McGonagall, previously portrayed by Maggie Smith.
Paapa Essiedu as Professor Snape
On the contrary, Paapa Essiedu is an up-and-coming star whose role in I May Destroy You led to his Primetime Emmy nomination. His professional career in acting started with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Ever since, audeinces have noticed him for his work on Gangs of London and Black Mirror. Essiedu’s skill at portraying intensity and complexity makes him an excellent candidate to play the dark and troubled Professor Snape, who was played by the late Alan Rickman.

HBO’s Response to Speculation
HBO has refused to comment on the rumoured castings. “As we navigate pre-production, we will only announce details as we close deals.” The reboot series, which the makers unveiled in April 2023, will reimagine all seven Harry Potter books within ten years. This means one book will be covered in one season.
J.K. Rowling is the executive producer with Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts. Francesca Gardiner will write the first season based on The Philosopher’s Stone. With HBO reportedly looking for a late 2026 or early 2027 premiere, fans are excited to see how this new cast will bring new life to familiar characters. With each name that is released, the series continues to look like a bold reboot of the Wizarding World.
