According to animation historian Jerry Beck, Courage the Cowardly Dog’s lead writer, David Steven Cohen, died at the age of 58. The cause of Cohen’s death was cancer.
A Legacy
The spooky narrative that made Courage the Cowardly Dog a popular yet unnerving children’s animated series on Cartoon Network was greatly influenced by Cohen. Cohen joined the writing staff in season 1 and eventually rose to the position of chief writer, producing many of the most memorable episodes in seasons 2, 3 and 4, even though John R. Dilworth conceived the show. The penultimate episode before the series’ 2002 finale was his last contribution.

Iconic Episodes
“Klub Katz,” “1000 Years of Courage,” “Forbidden Hat of Gold” and “The Sand Whale Strikes” are a few of Cohen’s most famous episodes. His contributions helped create the show’s distinctive fusion of dark humour, terror and emotional storytelling, proving that children like stories that evoke fear.
Other Renowned Work
In addition to Courage, Cohen proved his talents in animation and children’s television by writing for Phil of the Future, The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss and Balto.
