Katy Perry is Going to Space…and Maybe You Can Too

Singer and songwriter Katy Perry is now prepared to bless the space with her presence. Who says female icons can’t do it all? They run the world, and now it appears they are taking on space, too!

Katy Perry and the Girls in Space

On Monday morning, pop star Katy Perry will be starting her journey to space. Accompanying her will be some other prominent females, too. This includes Lauren Sánchez (fiancée of Jeff Bezos), Gayle King (journalist and TV presenter), Amanda Nguyen (civil rights activist), Kerrianne Flynn (producer) and Aisha Bowe (former NASA rocket scientist). Whether these women come from entertainment, entrepreneurship, or engineering, there is no doubt that each of them has forged her own path to success while inspiring others along the way. Now, they are preparing to make history on Blue Origin’s all-women space mission- the first all-female crew in space since 1963.

“Space is going to finally be glam,” Perry told Elle magazine. “We are going to put the ‘ass’ in astronaut,” Perry added.

About the Mission

A post shared by Blue Origin (@blueorigin)

This journey is making waves on social media because it marks the first all-women suborbital mission for Blue Origin (Jeff Bezos’s spaceflight company) as well as the first flight to space in over 60 years without a man on board. It’s a milestone moment in space tourism and puts this frontier on bucket lists of travellers who, for now, can afford it.

The entire trip is only expected to last 11 minutes, and the women will be going up in a rocket that flies itself, allowing each of them to enjoy the flight as passengers. Once they reach space, they’ll be able to float around the rocket, experiencing weightlessness and looking out the windows at the universe and Earth below for about four minutes before coming back down. Oh, and don’t worry, they have been briefed about all this!

Maybe You Can Go Too!

Now the question that arises here is that, how can we non-celebrities go (if we can, that is? ) Well, if budget is not a problem then you too can go visit the space too. But with a few caveats.

A handful of companies are making it (semi) accessible to regular people with deep pockets and a thirst for the extraordinary. These include:

Virgin Galactic

Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic is offering one of the most amazing ways for normal people to explore space. Their suborbital flights take you about 80 km above Earth, where you’ll experience a few minutes of zero gravity and catch a view of our planet’s curvature before gently gliding back to the runway. The full experience lasts around 90 minutes, and a seat will cost you $600,000.

SpaceX

Anyone who is not living under a rock these days will know how Elon Musk’s SpaceX is THE ride. In 2021, the company made headlines when it launched four civilians into Earth’s orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, completing the first all-civilian orbital mission. The cost? $220 million, reportedly covered by billionaire Jared Isaacman.

Blue Origin

Among the most high-profile names in commercial spaceflight, Blue Origin, which offers a short-but-spectacular journey aboard its New Shepard rocket, which is what Katy Perry and her “girlies” will be travelling on. In this flight, people will travel 100 km above Earth, crossing the Kármán line and enjoying a few minutes of weightlessness. Their first passenger mission was launched in July 2021, with seats said to be priced between $250,000 to $300,000.

Axiom Space

Taking luxury travel to an entirely new level, Axiom Space is organising private missions to the International Space Station. In this mission, the people on board will orbit Earth in a SpaceX capsule and live aboard the ISS. Axiom is also working on building the world’s first commercial space station and has even collaborated with NASA on lunar spacesuits. The price for this interstellar adventure? A hefty $55 million per person. We warned you above, it’s all a game of money!

Let’s wait for Katy Perry and the other ladies to arrive and see how this mission went for them. If it’s successful (which hopefully it will be), then we will surely see a huge group of elites joining the trend.

In this day and age, it seems like anybody can become Neil Armstrong. Thankfully, he isn’t here to watch this unfold.
