Karachi has made a strong move towards enhancing road safety by proposing a Rs15,000 penalty for drivers driving in the wrong direction. The move, made by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), is aimed at preventing careless driving and minimising road accidents, particularly on the city’s most congested roads.
Why this Decision Matters
The penalty is issued after a dramatic increase in road accidents reported in recent months. In February 2025, Karachi experienced 73 deaths, including eight women and five children. Additionally, more than 700 people were seriously injured, of whom over 90 were women.
These are only serious cases admitted to tertiary-care hospitals, reports the Edhi Information Bureau. In fact, more than 500 victims of accidents, primarily motorcyclists, report for treatment every day in private and public hospitals in Karachi. Clearly, the traffic mayhem in the city needed to be addressed urgently.

Strict Enforcement Backed by Leadership
The drive is being conducted under the monitoring of Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab and the Karachi Task Force. The fine will be imposed by city wardens, with a formal resolution to be tabled at the next KMC council meeting.
Wahab highlighted the importance of making this shift with urgency, asserting that tough actions must be taken to avoid causing fatal accidents and maintain smooth traffic flow.
He appealed to drivers and motorcyclists to comply with traffic rules and cooperate with enforcement personnel in safeguarding lives.
Implications for Businesses and Citizens
This is not just applicable to weekday commuters but even to logistics firms, delivery businesses, and transport firms in Karachi. For companies that depend on the timely movement of personnel and goods, compliance with traffic regulations is more important than ever before to prevent fines and delays.
