After years of waiting, fans finally caught a glimpse of Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed in the same frame again. However, the anticipation and excitement were short-lived after Barzakhs first few episodes hit the internet. A vision of Asim Abbasi, Barzakh is facing severe criticism due to elements of LGBTQ in its plot.
Asim Abbasi Responds To Critics
The mastermind behind the series, Asim Abbasi, has decided to not keep his silence. Shortly after widespread hate, critique, and backlash, Asim spoke up. Sharing on his Instagram story, Asim said, “With all due respect, if you find heterosexual/LGBTQ storylines ‘distasteful’ please do not watch my content. Thank You.”
Asim then proceeded to mention the hardworking team that has helped and supported him. He shared that their hard work deserves respect and appreciation too. He shared that they champion the rights of all, and the stories they believe in.
Concerns Posed By Netizens
Given Pakistan is still quite traditional, the content created caters to it. The series, film, and even the music produced are heavily localized and centric to the norms and traditions. When Asim Abbasi brought something that was Western and opposed the popular religion, of course, there had to be backlash.
Most of the concerns were regarding the effects of introducing these concepts in Pakistan. Which inherently would normalize these ideas in the minds of locals.
The comments under various posts of the show simply suggested one thing, boycott. The locals seem to be so opposed to Asim Abbasi’s ownership of the plot having heterosexual references that they have decided not to entertain it at all. Words such as nonsense, shameless, and filth are repeatedly being commented on.
Asim comes from a well-curated vision and takes inspiration from successful global directors. The consumers he is producing content for should be taken into consideration.
