Assassin’s Creed Shadows was already a hotly awaited title, not only for the ambitious gameplay promises but also for surprise details about its development team. Marc-Alexis Cote, head of Assassin’s Creed franchise at Ubisoft, disclosed recently that “probably half” of the team working on Shadows were first-time game developers. This is an indicator of the shift that occurred in the industry talent pool post-pandemic.

A New Generation of Developers

According to Cote, the development team for the game has a lot of junior members because the industry globally has a trend of lower seniority. “You have to explain to them that even though they’re playing the game right now and think it’s the worst thing they’ve ever seen; it’s going to be good,” he said regarding the difficulty of handling a less-experienced team.

This change may bring new inspiration to the series, something that the series has thrived on since its initiation. It also poses challenges when it comes to maintaining the standards people expect from the franchise.

The Perfection Delay

Assassin’s Creed Shadows was initially planned to be released in November 2024 but has been postponed to February 2025. The company attributed the delay to a disappointing quarter of underperformance, partly due to a lacklustre reaction to Star Wars Outlaws. Despite the disappointment, the firm quickly reassured the fans that the game was “feature complete” and would be polished in this extra time.

The delay is also meant to ensure that the dual-protagonist narrative in Shadows will succeed. The game will have two protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, each with their own style of gameplay, which makes it the “biggest entry in the franchise.” Ubisoft is focused on making a more refined experience to fit the scale of its vision.

Ambition and Inexperience

The combination of fresh talent and the development timeline of Shadows itself has a lot of exciting ingredients. Though it will have members with less experience, it also means that the developers are open to giving new voices space in the gaming industry.

And finally, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will have its chance at success because of the delayed release. Whether it will help with its place in the history books of the franchise or end up being a bottleneck by the fresh talent remains to be seen. However, one thing for sure is that fans are going to watch closely for its release in February 2025.
