Former Pakistan wicket-keeper Atiq-uz-Zaman has taken a strong stance against Gary Kirsten, Pakistan’s white-ball coach, following Kirsten’s recent detailed report submitted to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Atiq’s Bold Remarks
In a candid interview with a local sports platform, Atiq-uz-Zaman did not mince his words in slamming Kirsten over complaining to the PCB, rather than solving the issues.
“Gary Kirsten came in and started complaining already. If you had leadership skills, why would you complain to the board about them? You should have resolved it while you were there. So, fingers crossed, I hope they do well, but I don’t see things getting fixed quickly,” Atiq remarked bluntly.
Kirsten’s Report Unveils Major Concerns
Gary Kirsten, who joined the Pakistan team right before the T20 World Cup 2024, recently forwarded a comprehensive report to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
This report detailed the reasons behind Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, where they failed to advance to the Super Eights stage.
The report highlighted several critical areas of concern, including fitness levels, discipline issues, and game awareness among the players. Kirsten’s thorough analysis aimed to provide a clear picture of the team’s shortcomings during the tournament.
PCB Plans Major Overhaul
In response to the dismal World Cup campaign, the PCB is preparing for significant changes within Pakistan cricket. In the first phase, Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq were removed from their positions.
The new committee was revealed recently, retaining existing members Mohammad Yousuf and Asad Shafiq, who will be joined by the head coach and captain of the respective format, hinting at different squads in all three formats.
To address the issues raised in Kirsten’s report, the PCB is set to introduce a mandatory rigorous fitness assessment for every player every three months. This initiative aims to ensure that all players maintain optimal fitness levels throughout the year.
Meanwhile, a zero-tolerance discipline policy will also be introduced to maintain harmony in the team after reports of infighting within the squad.
Additionally, participation in domestic cricket has been made compulsory. The selection committee will oversee this process meticulously, ensuring that players remain engaged and competitive within the domestic circuit.
Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten, as the head coaches of the red and white-ball teams respectively, have been granted full autonomy to make decisions for their teams.
