Azhar Mahmood Expresses Interest in Becoming Pakistan's Next Head Coach

Azhar Mahmood, the former Pakistan all-rounder, has confirmed his intention to apply for the head coach position of the Pakistan men’s cricket team. As the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) finalises its coaching lineup ahead of a packed international calendar, Azhar declared in a recent interview, “I’m definitely going to apply for the Pakistan team head coach role.”

Currently serving as an assistant coach, Azhar already plays a key role in Pakistan’s coaching setup. He previously worked as the team’s bowling coach from 2016 to 2019 and stepped up as interim head coach during the recent tour of New Zealand. Under his leadership, Pakistan managed to draw the T20I series 2-2.

The PCB has set May 4 as the deadline for coaching applications and expects to announce its decision shortly after. This appointment holds added significance with the T20 World Cup and other major international tournaments approaching fast.

Meanwhile, Mike Hesson, former New Zealand head coach and current Islamabad United coach in the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL), has also emerged as a top contender. Hesson, known for his tactical acumen, led New Zealand from 2012 to 2018 and has served in senior IPL coaching roles.

Sources say the PCB is seriously considering Hesson for the white-ball coaching role. If selected, he would begin with the five-match T20I series against Bangladesh, scheduled from May 25 to June 3 in Faisalabad and Lahore.

With both Azhar and Hesson in the mix, the PCB faces a critical decision that could shape Pakistan’s performance in upcoming global tournaments.
