Bengaluru Techie Suicide Exposes Misuse of Dowry Act

Engineer Atul Subhash’s tragic death was discovered when neighbours alerted the police on Monday morning. Officers responded to the scene and conducted an autopsy at CV Raman Nagar Government Hospital. The family received the body after the procedure. The engineer, who had married in 2019 and had a young son, faced severe marital problems. His wife reportedly demanded that he distance himself from his family. In April 2022, she filed multiple cases against him under the Dowry Act. These cases caused him immense emotional and financial strain. He had to attend over 40 court hearings in one year, resulting in significant expenses. In his suicide note, he expressed his love for his son and criticised the legal system for enabling harassment.

The engineerโ€™s cousin and brother explained the emotional toll the legal battles took on him, with the cousin pointing out the misuse of the Dowry Act. The note also accused a judge of mocking him and dismissing his concerns. The wifeโ€™s uncle appeared in a video, denying any involvement and stating that he had not been in touch with the family for years. The wife filed the original case in April 2022, and the charge sheet was later sent to court. The FIR included charges under sections of the Indian Penal Code, including cruelty, assault, and dowry-related offences.
