Boxing Legend George Foreman Dies at 76

George Foreman, the legendary two-time world heavyweight boxing champion and Olympic gold medallist, has passed away at the age of 76. His family confirmed the news on Friday through his official Instagram account.

“Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr., who peacefully departed on 21 March 2025, surrounded by loved ones,” the statement read.

Foreman was one of the most dominant heavyweight boxers in history. He won his first world title in 1973 after knocking out Joe Frazier. However, he became widely known for his 1974 fight against Muhammad Ali, famously called the “Rumble in the Jungle,” where he suffered his first professional loss.

Born in Texas in 1949, Foreman grew up in a challenging Houston neighbourhood. He dropped out of school at 15 but later joined the Job Corps, where he was introduced to boxing. His talent quickly became evident, and by 19, he won a gold medal in boxing at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. This achievement launched his professional career.

After a successful boxing run, Foreman retired in 1977 following a life-changing near-death experience. However, he shocked the world by making a comeback a decade later, at the age of 38. In 1994, at 45, he reclaimed the world heavyweight championship by defeating Michael Moorer. This victory made him the oldest heavyweight champion in history at the time.

Beyond boxing, Foreman found success as a businessman and television personality. He became the face of the George Foreman Grill, a product that sold over 100 million units worldwide, making him a household name.

On the personal front, Foreman was married five times and had 12 children. Notably, five of his sons were named George. He is survived by his wife, Mary Joan Martelly, and 11 of his children.

Foremanโ€™s impact on boxing, business, and popular culture remains significant. His contributions to the sport and his achievements outside the ring have left an enduring legacy. Fans and sports figures worldwide are mourning the loss of one of boxingโ€™s greatest champions.
