Ramazan in Pakistan calls for performing good deeds and creating an atmosphere of kindness.
When we think of compassion, especially in Ramazan, it is usually in the form of Zakaat where we mostly think of the wealthy giving ample amounts of money to the less privileged.
However, Brooke Bond Supreme’s latest ad ‘Zaiqa Neki ka‘ just made us think about kindness in a new, broader perspective.
The ad narrates a beautiful story of a small dhaba owner, Aslam, who portrays a surprisingly pleasant perspective on compassion and goodwill.

Compassion–More About the Intent than the Amount
The ad shows a contrast between the humble Aslam who runs to his dhaba before Iftar time and his seemingly well-off acquaintance, Saadiq.
As Aslam hurriedly leaves for his dhaba after offering namaz at the mosque, Saadiq Saahab questions his intent for opening a shop during the day when everyone is fasting and all other shops in the market are shut.
It is soon revealed that Aslam’s reason for operating his shop during fasting hours is not to sell tea to make a profit but to set up a cooling fan to help his passers-by get relief from the scorching heat of the sun. It is a simple act of (neki) kindness that touches many a heart.
Neki is Not Necessarily Performed by the Affluent
In a conventional setting, we would see Saadiq being kind to Aslam, the dhaba owner, as the latter is clearly the less privileged one.
However, in the ad, it is shown the other way around thus creating a message of how even small actions can be observed in Ramazan(and otherwise) in the name of goodwill.
The ad teaches us that it is always the intent that will matter to God, no matter how small your deed may seem.
The Bigger the Heart, The Larger the Impact
Aslam’s act of kindness is in the form of opening his shop during the day only to provide a cool place to sit for pedestrians passing. After Iftar he serves hot cups of tea made with a smile on his tired face, love in his big heart, and the will to positively contribute to society.
Isn’t that what kindness is all about? Doing whatever little we can, with sincerity, to play our part in improving the world we live in?
