The prestigious event may be synonymous with glamour, but the Cannes Film Festival still sees its share of fashion faux pas each year — although these are very often intentional attention-grabbing outfits. With the 71st edition of the French festival just around the corner (May 8-19, 2018), here’s a look at some of the event’s biggest red carpet fails.
Never one to shy away from eccentricity, singer Björk stepped out in a special candy pink paper-lantern gown. This, however, was mismatched with clashing blue shoes. Cannes, May 17, 2000.
The outfit, the hair, the pose … where to start! Nothing could be further from the usual Cannes glam. Rona Hartner shows the perfect example of a fashion faux pas. Cannes, May 20, 2004.
Victoria Silvstedt’s leather dress looks like it’s missing some fabric, both on the neckline and around the hips. Cannes, May 18, 2005.
Actress and burlesque dancer Miss Dirty Martini picked a very — ahem — colorful gown to walk the Cannes red carpet. It certainly turned heads. Cannes, May 13, 2010.
Adriana Karembeu in full meringue mode on the La Croisette strip. Frill overload! Cannes, May 17, 2011.
It seems to be a Cannes tradition for Elena Lenina to walk the red carpet in some kind of eccentric creation. Cannes, May 16, 2012.
The dress may be sublime, but it probably wasn’t the best choice for a red carpet event. Here, singer Cheryl Cole — who usually nails her fashion choices — blends into the red carpet. Cannes, May 20, 2012.
Actress Bai Ling seems to have dressed for the wrong event, with a look totally unsuitable for a prestigious Film Festival. While the eighties-style top is a great start, the skull pants and platforms kill the look. Cannes, May 21, 2013.
Although sublime, Sophie Marceau’s dress was slit so high that she flashed her underwear when walking up the Palais des Festivals steps. Cannes, May 14, 2015.
Victoria Abril brought global inspirations to Cannes with colorful prints and unusual headwear. An interesting choice, but possibly a bit too extreme for Cannes? May 17, 2017.
