Recently released CCTV footage from Armaghan Qureshi’s house shows Armaghan firing at police team during a raid at his residence in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA). The footage clearly shows a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) getting shot and injured. It also shows Armaghan, the main suspect in the Mustafa Amir murder case, with a girl during the incident.
In the video, Armaghan is seen firing an automatic weapon at police officials while talking on the phone. The police were cutting the grill at a stairway gate during the raid when the firing started.
The case is linked to the alleged kidnapping and murder of Mustafa, a BBA student who went missing on January 6. Police later found his body in a car near the Hub checkpost on January 12. The Edhi Foundation buried the body on January 16. A three-member medical board, under the supervision of a judicial magistrate, later exhumed the body for further investigation.
The incident at Armaghan’s house happened in February when a team from the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) tried to raid his residence. AVCC is a special Karachi police unit that deals with murder and extortion cases.
Money Laundering and Fraud Allegations
Following the raid and shooting, the AVCC expanded its investigation and contacted the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to look into a call centre found at Armaghan’s home. A day earlier, the FIA had registered another case against Armaghan. The FIR, filed by the agency’s anti-money laundering circle, accused him of running a hawala-hundi network, illegal cryptocurrency transactions, and online fraud.
The FIR also stated that Armaghan, along with his father, had set up a company in the US to operate the hawala-hundi business. In addition, in 2018, he established an illegal call centre that ran a “organised network” of online scams in the United States.
