In an exciting twist, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has hinted that Team India might visit Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025, but it all hinges on government approval.
Speaking at the Uttar Pradesh Premier League players’ auction, Shukla stressed the importance of getting the green light from the Indian government before any plans are finalized.
Government Approval is Key
“We are waiting for the approval of the Indian government,” Shukla said, underscoring that government authorization is crucial for the Indian cricket team’s travel to Pakistan.
The uncertainty surrounding the trip has been a hot topic, especially since the Champions Trophy is set to take place in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9, 2025.
When asked about the possibility of Pakistan boycotting the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, Shukla remained unfazed.
“Pakistan can say whatever it wants about coming to India during the 2026 World Cup,” he remarked, highlighting that the decision rests with the Indian government.
A senior BCCI official acknowledged that the PCB might retaliate if India decides not to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.
“Of course, we expect retaliation. If we don’t travel to Pakistan, they will threaten to boycott the Asia Cup. But PCB should understand that it’s not in BCCI’s hands. Sending a team to a foreign country requires the government of India’s permission,” the official said.
PCB’s Stance On Champions Trophy
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been clear about its stance. They have asked the BCCI for written proof if the Indian government denies permission due to security concerns.
The BCCI, on the other hand, has reportedly requested the ICC to either move the Champions Trophy out of Pakistan or schedule India’s matches at a neutral venue.
