Pakistani designers aren’t exactly known for their original and versatile designs. Be it bags, shoes, or clothes, you will always find something you saw online in these stores. However, these brands usually change the signs just enough to avoid getting sued. Most of Break Out’s tops are designs taken from Zara and changed just a little bit. You’ll either see a sweatshirt in a different color, or a top with a different pattern on it.

When it comes to popular shoe and bag stores such as Stylo, it is pretty much the same case. The bags are just bedazzled versions of preexisting designs. Other clothing brands such as Nishat and Ethnic have also jumped on the bandwagon. The shoes and bags are just copies of popular designs across the world.

Inspiration or Design Theft?

A few brands have been called out on social media for selling outfits that look very similar to those from famous designers such as Marc Jacobs, Channel, Guess, Coach, and Zara. Fashion enthusiasts and critics believe that this harms the reputation of the local fashion industry. It also raises questions about the ethics of copying designs without permission.

Here are some examples:

The Marc Jacobs Canvas Tote was a very popular design. It quickly took over social media and almost every celebrity was spotted having one. Nishat and Ethnic have both copied the designs raising the question of copies or inspiration.

Nishat Linen’s bag collection is full of dupes. Another example of this is their replica of Hermes’s popular Birkin bag.

Though replicating designs isn’t the best strategy, these local brands are making designer bags more accessible to those who can’t afford them. They’re providing a similar, local alternative to designer bags. This helps you enjoy the designs without having to spend unnecessary amounts.

Why is this happening? Why can’t Pakistani brands and designers come up with something new? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
