International award filmmaker, Rafay Rashdi, who’s known for his daring creative choices, has taken a darker and more intense turn with the latest Deemak. This project marks a noticeable departure from his earlier works, showcasing sharp direction and emotionally-provoking atmosphere. It really emphasises Rashdi’s knack for pushing boundaries and crafting fresh, captivating stories.

Along with Rafay Rashidi, writer Ayesha Muzaffar, aka Abusjinns on Instagram, is not new to the world of unseen. Ayesha has a huge Instagram following where she writes stories about the paranormal. Even though this is her first movie script, Ayesha has written four books previously, the most popular one being Abu’s Jinns. Her extensive knowledge on the subject of paranormal makes her the perfect person to write such a complex yet interesting story.

The Star Cast

The trailer offers a glimpse into a world brimming with psychological tension and authentic human emotions. The cast, featuring legendry actor Faysal Quraishi, brilliant Sonya Hussyn and the absolutely talented Samina Peerzada, delivers powerful performances, breathing life into their complex characters in a way that feels both genuine and relatable. This impressive lineup of actors is indeed a strong suit of the movie.

Plot: A Quiet Invasion of the Mind

Deemak, which translates to “termite,” cleverly uses the imagery of a termite to illustrate how trauma and emotional pain can gradually gnaw away at a person’s mind. The film takes a deep dive into the effects of neglect, unexpressed emotions and past hurts, revealing how they can silently torment individuals from within.

Set against a backdrop that feels both tense and stifling, it follows characters who are quietly grappling with their own internal struggles. Rather than relying on fast-paced action, Deemak captivates viewers with its emotional depth and intricate psychological narrative.

The real mystery lies not in the events that will transpire, but in understanding why these characters fell apart in the first place.

For the Thinkers, the Feelers and the Realists

This movie targets a grown-up reflective audience who values complexity, emotional intensity and true-to-life storytelling. It’ll resonate with Gen Z and millennials looking for stories that go beyond the surface and are close to home. Those who enjoy Pakistani independent films or global psychological dramas, or even Malaysian or Thai horror films, will find Dheemak engaging and familiar. It’s also meant for anyone who’s ever thought about mental well-being and emotional decline, or what staying quiet can cost.

A Chilling Reminder of what Lies Beneath the Surface

The trailer really sticks with you. Rafay Rashdi’s direction and Ayesha Muzaffar’s writing paired with powerful performances and an eerie art design, makes for a captivating experience. The visuals are gritty, the sound design is crisp, and the metaphors hit hard.

If the complete film matches the promise of the trailer, Dheemak could become a groundbreaking project for Pakistani cinema- one that would bravely address mental health and emotional struggles without sugarcoating or oversimplifying the issues.
