Azma Bukhari, Punjab’s minister, is fighting a Deepfake video that aims to violate her rights as a politician. The manipulated sexualized clip replaces her face with the body of an actor that went viral on social media. “It was very difficult, I was depressed,” said Bukhari. โMy daughter hugged me and said, ‘Mama, you have to fight it out.'” Bukhari is now in Lahoreโs High Court seeking justice so the culprits can face the consequences they deserve.
In Pakistan, Deepfake videos and images are being weaponized to target women in the public sector. Bukhari stresses that there should be an enhancement of cybercrime laws and investigation capabilities. Moreover, activists have also raised their voices against the possibility of using such laws as a tool to oppress opposition. โThey will not block or remove the sites; it violates freedom of speech,โ said Nighat Dad, a lawyer and digital rights activist.
