The Sindh government has taken a significant step towards promoting gender equality and ensuring safety during women’s commutes by introducing special training programs for female bus drivers. This decision was approved in the 10th board meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA), along with other crucial decisions aimed at improving public transportation.
Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon emphasized that empowering women in all fields is a vision of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The inclusion of female bus drivers in the flagship women-only pink buses project will not only enhance gender equality but also create a sense of safety and security for female commuters.
During the meeting, the possibility of providing subsidies for the People’s Bus Service was also discussed and approved by the cabinet. The second phase of the People’s Bus Service will witness the addition of 500 buses, along with the introduction of an environment-friendly electric taxi service. This initiative is expected to alleviate travel problems for the public and generate new employment opportunities while promoting environmental consciousness.
In addition to the women’s driver training and public transport enhancements, the SMTA board also reviewed the progress of the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. The comprehensive meeting involved various key stakeholders, including transport officials and representatives from the planning and development department. These collective efforts reflect the government’s commitment to making significant improvements to public transportation and empowering women in the region.
