Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has resumed its flights to Europe after a four-year suspension. The first flight, PK 749, departed for Paris from Islamabad on Friday, marking a major milestone for the national carrier. The flight was fully booked, signalling a positive turn for the struggling airline.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) lifted the ban on PIA flights after the national carrier addressed compliance issues and safety concerns. The ban was imposed in 2020 due to a scandal involving “fake” pilot licenses, which came to light after a tragic plane crash in Karachi that killed 97 people.

Speaking at a ceremony, Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif highlighted that PIAโs return to European skies is a significant step toward recovery. He emphasised that restoring profitable routes, like those to Paris, is vital for the airline and overseas Pakistanis. Asif confirmed that direct flights to the UK would be launched soon, expanding PIAโs global reach.
The minister also suggested that privatisation could secure PIAโs long-term success. He expressed hope for the airlineโs future while criticising “irresponsible” remarks by a former minister that damaged PIAโs reputation. With plans for cost-effective ticket pricing and more routes, PIA is on a path to rebuild its legacy.
