Keeping children away from gadgets in today’s fast pacing world can make them feel deprived. A lot of effort and thought needs to be put into working out a foolproof plan to keep children busy without giving them gadgets.
If you are worried that your child is spending way too much time using gadgets, here’s what you can do to keep them busy and distracted:
1. Plan A Treasure Hunt (read: Book Hunt) Activity
Being a parent, you definitely know what interests your child. Buy a few books that your child would love to read. Hide them at different places within your house. Tell them that you have got presents for them; however, they need to dig them out on their own.
Since your child would have put in a lot of time and effort into finding out the hidden presents, they would generally be tempted to spend time reading those books. *Drum Rolls* Your child has successfully been distracted towards a productive task! Congratulations!
2. Offer Them Some Incentive
You cannot expect children, at such a tender age, to spend the entire day doing something productive. We all need a break, and so do they. They need some entertainment, and that’s where you have to play your role. You can persuade them to stay away from their gadgets to receive a reward at the end of the day.
For example, tell them that if they do not use their gadgets the entire day, you will take them out, probably to their favorite park or playland, or you will get them their favorite toy. Tempting young children with such incentives usually works okay.
3. Cook With Them
Knowing how to cook is an essential life skill that everyone should know. Having your children help you in the kitchen would not only keep them occupied and but also help them learn a vital life skill. Cooking can be a pretty daunting task, especially when you have to prepare a variety of items in a single day.
However, you can transform it into a fun activity by having your child accompany you in the kitchen. Give them tasks that they can manage, such as passing on the ingredients that you need, setting the dining table, etc. Cooking together can be a perfect bonding time for you and your child.
4. Provide Them With Better Alternatives
To keep children away from gadgets in their free time, you need to have something more interesting to offer. For example, you can get them enrolled in swimming classes or gymnastics or any other outdoor activity that they might be interested in. Please drop them off and pick them up yourself, so they know that there is someone equally interested in their activities. Your involvement in your child’s affairs can do wonders in keeping them motivated.
5. Let Them Decide Some Fun Activities For Themselves
Take an empty candy jar and let your child brainstorm what they would like to do whenever they get bored. Write all of their suggestions on small chits of colored paper and put them in the jar. Your child gets to pick one chit every time they get bored. They’d always be excited to know what their chit wants them to do.
