Former Indian batter Gautam Gambhir is on the verge of becoming the new head coach of Team India. However, he will take charge after the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies.
With several foreign coaches opting for the flexibility of franchise leagues over the year-long commitment of a national team, Gambhir has emerged as the frontrunner for the position.
Reports suggest that discussions between Gambhir and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are underway and heading towards the former batter’s appointment. The T20 World Cup will be the last event for Team India under current head coach Rahul Dravid.
Gambhir is believed to have submitted his application before the deadline on Monday, May 27, starting the negotiations between him and the BCCI.
Reports reveal that BCCI Secretary Jay Shah and Gambhir are discussing the role with a strong sense of national duty. Their conversations reportedly centre around the shared belief that “we must do it for the country.” Both parties emphasize the importance of serving the country’s cricketing interests.
Moreover, Gambhir has discussed the possibility of accepting the coaching role with close associates, including Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) co-owner Shah Rukh Khan. He recently led KKR to their IPL title in the 2024 edition as a team mentor for KKR. Previously, he has also led the franchise to IPL glory as captain.
For the unversed, the Bollywood star also offered a blank cheque to Gambhir for staying as the team mentor for the next few years. However, it seems Gambhir has already declined the offer, choosing country over money.
With his proven track record with Gujrat Titans and KKR as well as a strong sense of national duty, Gautam Gambhir seems well-equipped to lead India to success on the world stage.
