Australia’s all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell, confirmed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) would likely mark the conclusion of his cricketing journey.
Recently retained by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the 2024 IPL mini-auction, Maxwell’s recent form suggests he still possesses considerable skill and potential.
His stint with the Australian squad during the T20I series against India saw Maxwell’s record-equalling fourth T20I hundred, securing Australia’s sole victory in the series.
Notably, he was instrumental in Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup triumph, scoring two centuries, including a historic double-ton against Afghanistan in a remarkable chase.
Post the India series, Maxwell’s focus shifts to leading the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, further gearing up for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Speaking upon his return to Australia, Maxwell highlighted the pivotal role of the IPL in shaping his career.
Maxwell expressed the IPL’s significance in his cricketing journey: “The IPL will probably be the last tournament I ever play, as I will play the IPL until I can’t walk anymore.”
“The tournament has been immensely beneficial throughout my career. The exposure to coaches, interactions with international players like AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli, it’s an unparalleled learning experience.”
Maxwell had a prolific stint with Kings XI Punjab (now renamed Punjab Kings) in his early days, followed by a string of poor seasons. However, he has found his mojo back with his current stint with RCB, where he has spent a couple of seasons.
